Very slow and not intuitive; it would be my last choice for version control systems. The UI is a little confusing at times and seems a little outdated. It needs a lot of improvement. It is suited for small projects and fewer number of projects. But if there are huge projects and many projects to be maintained in a portfolio, its a little hard to manage.

Puppet Enterprise

Well-suited for:
  • Deploying infrastructure-as-code from a central version-control repository
  • Providing a reliable mechanism for quickly building out new datacenters or recovering from a major disaster-type event
  • Standardizing middleware, code, and configurations running systems and applications
  • Automatically pushing configurations out to multiple clients from a central repository
Not well-suited for:
  • Managing existing infrastructure and/or forcing a standard configuration onto already-deployed and running infrastructure

Pros

  • One place for most recent code with history, avoid any conflict/confusion among other team/members.
  • Stream/Workflow approach to control approval process betwen all the teams, which I couldn't find in other version control tools I worked.
  • Bundle our code in a small group (called, Issues in Accurev) to differentiate between different projects.

  • Provides a reliable mechanism for deploying infrastructure-as-code, especially when integrated with source control (such as Git).
  • Manages system configuration drift to provide greater stability and system up-time; the same configuration-as-code can be pushed out over and over.
  • A strong asset when moving teams towards DevOps by providing development a way to take control of their own assets.

Cons

  • Ability to zoom in/out for stream-view. We currently have many streams/substreams and unable to view the entire workflow. Zooming in/out would benefit.
  • Being a designer, I use Adobe Flash and SWF files. When updating the SWF files, Accurev does not see these files as being changed and you will be unable to promote. In order to push changes, you must totally rename the SWF file.

  • A bit of a steep learning curve but something that can be easily understood once a few basics are grasped and use of Puppet is put into practice.
  • Does not fit well with existing infrastructure but that is not necessarily a failing with Puppet but can require a radical shift in thinking and procedures to reliably implement.

I give it this rating because I found an alternate application that is much more cost effective and quicker

Alternatives Considered

Git is one obvious alternative. However, Git is leveraging the command line and has minimal interface. Developer must be acclimated with command line in order to use Git.

Puppet was the first software for data center automation that we incorporated in our infrastructure and we were pleased enough to keep going with it.
