Are you familiar with the Command Line? If so Git may be a better alternative.

If requiring a CI system and you have VMs available to host it yourself, TeamCity is a great choice.

  • Build: Parameterization, Chaining from multiple sources, Templates, and general ease of use.
  • Release: Works extremely well with "Build" process.
  • Updates and Upgrades are simple, effective, and reliable.

Cons

  • Ability to zoom in/out for stream-view. We currently have many streams/substreams and unable to view the entire workflow. Zooming in/out would benefit.
  • Being a designer, I use Adobe Flash and SWF files. When updating the SWF files, Accurev does not see these files as being changed and you will be unable to promote. In order to push changes, you must totally rename the SWF file.

  • Pipeline Visualization: TeamCity's weakest area

Alternatives Considered

Git is one obvious alternative. However, Git is leveraging the command line and has minimal interface. Developer must be acclimated with command line in order to use Git.

TeamCity competes against the TFS build, Visual Studio Team services and Jenkins the open source workhorse. The reason for selecting TeamCity was because it was found to be a great fit for all the diverse projects on a spectrum of technologies we have which the TFS Build clearly lacks. Jenkins is also a good fit but TeamCity has the edge because of the maturity and the product and support it provides.

Return on Investment

  • Stable and safe promotions which leads to increased employee efficiency

  • It has drastically improved the turnaround time for building and deploying projects to Production
  • The build process can be augmented by adding build servers quickly
  • In my opinion the licensing cost is not expensive at least for small to medium enterprises, although I haven't looked in detail into how it changes when you move up.
