Acquia Open Digital Experience Platform (DXP)

Acquia is well-suited for any Drupal web platform. I think it best plays in the enterprise space, either for B2B or nonprofit/higher ed/government. Acquia is a great solution for smaller web platforms, as well, but the price is typically prohibitive in these scenarios.

WP Engine

I think WP Engine is great for any company that wants a fully-featured WordPress host with several safety and security mechanisms. From automatic backups, to security management, to caching & CDN, all the tools are provided to deploy a world-class WordPress website. If budget is a concern, there are cheaper hosts but they offer fewer tools. If complicated server access or complicated proxying setups are required, I would not go with WP Engine. For example, last time I checked their documentation, they do not support reverse proxying to their sites. For complicated situations where reverse proxying is required, a different solution may be necessary.

Pros

Acquia Open Digital Experience Platform (DXP)

  • The Acquia Cloud Hosting (enterprise) provides a three-server solution. You have a Development, Staging (or UAT), and Production servers with a clear path of deployment straight up the chain. You may use Acquia's own Cloud Hooks, or their web admin UI interface to deploy to any or all of the servers.
  • Git is one of the foundation services built-in to the management of the website codebase. Allowing a developer, or well-trained end user (university employee) to easily deploy a tag or branch to any one of the servers, makes it very easy for us to offload the server / account management to the school, while we focus on improving their site.
  • Not only does Acquia Cloud provide a multi-datacenter failover disaster recovery solution, but they also maintain a multi-region failover as well, which allows for a fully redundant enviroment to be maintained in two geographic regions. No fear of losing any database changes or form submissions from students.
  • Lastly, the onboarding process is constantly being improved, and as I have been a third-party vendor involved in many of our hosting negotiations, I have seen it firsthand. Each enterprise client is assigned a small team of engineers, technical leads, and a pseudo-project-manager to explain the process in layman's terms to the client (university / college for my example), but they also perform a number of code reviews and best-practice analysis of a site prior to launch.

WP Engine

  • The enterprise level support is top-notch and available with little to no wait times.
  • The platform has given us self reliance to execute new ideas without complicating things with technology limitations.
  • WPEngine takes care of the security logistics so we can focus on new projects and initiatives.

Cons

Acquia Open Digital Experience Platform (DXP)

  • Responses from tickets aren't always from the same person, and can vary in effectiveness of solving your problem
  • While documentation is robust, it can be difficult to find exactly what you need
  • Provided forums are not monitored frequently, and are not as useful as they could be

WP Engine

  • I'd like to see WP Engine offer their own monitoring solution. When I say monitoring, I mean specific use cases that may end up being something you could script. This would keep customers from having to pay for additional services like Pingdom, New Relic, etc.
  • I would like to see some proactive analysis done by WP Engine on their customer sites - at least on their home pages, and offer up suggestions. This kind of goes along with the other example.
  • Finally, it would be nice to see a "lighter" offering, perhaps a plan that costs $49 for those who want to host only a few sites, or even 1 site.

As a Drupal Web Developer, I have not encountered or been exposed to any other hosting solution that could surpass the benefits of having a site hosted on Acquia Cloud. Although, for any side-project or low-cost freelance gigs, I cannot expect that I'll always have the option of recommending Acquia Cloud, and that's okay. While I am at work and trying to help our team gain more exposure to my companies' extensive list of clients, when we have the fortune of adding another Drupal-based client to our roster, getting those clients on Acquia Cloud makes every other aspect of building or modifying their school website that much easier

I was in a situation where I had to bolt Wordpress on to an existing infrastructure that could not support it. If I ever end up in that situation again, please kill me. Other than that reasonably common use case, I don't think it offers a lot of value over robust shared hosting, virtual private server (VPS) or dedicated servers.

It took very little time to learn their dashboard for managing WordPress sites. Their built-in tools are really well done, and the addition of security and CDN tools is great.

The best in the business, hands down. You can speak to an actual person via chat almost on demand. It has personally saved my job on multiple accounts. It's nice to have an impartial 3rd party that truly knows WordPress in your corner at all times. No one else in the WordPress space is even close to their level that I've found.

Acquia Open Digital Experience Platform (DXP)

If you're project requires a multisite architecture with scalable site deployment, and your budget allows, I would recommend Acquia. Acquia pricing sits more on an Enterprise level, so it is overwhelming if you're hosting a smaller site. Pantheon is much more suited for smaller, one-off, independent sites, and they provide similar tooling, availability, and free SSL with every site. If you need to control every aspect of your server environment and you have a server admin on staff, then Rackspace can provide you with an open hosting environment for you to configure yourself.

WP Engine

By usability, DigitalOcean wins. I love DigitalOcean for a lot of reasons, but their setup process is clunky and their feature set is fairly limited. Their setup requires technical competence but after that they are a breeze to work with. For what they do, DigitalOcean is perfect. WP Engine is in a different class. Their products are aimed at somewhere between novices and experts depending on the specific feature, their UI is clunky and clearly designed by engineers, but their customer support is excellent. This is an odd comparison given the distinct feature sets.By features, WP Engine wins. There is no comparison. DigitalOcean is a simple server with simple functionality and stellar hardware. WP Engine is a complex product with a ton of bells and whistles, though they run on dated hardware (shared HDD instead of VPS SSD). DigitalOcean has virtually no features, WP Engine has all of them.

Return on Investment

Acquia Open Digital Experience Platform (DXP)

  • Our website isn't a revenue generator, so we don't have specific ROI calculations.
  • The new website is helping us move off of a legacy on-prem server environment. The reduction of cost in maintaining those will be beneficial.
  • We have had to invest in some training for our developers to learn Drupal.

WP Engine

  • Substantial lost time. After my "You have failed me for the last time" moment with WP Engine, I spent the week of October 22nd, 2018 migrating all our client sites to Kinsta - an emerging leader in Managed WordPress hosting.
  • Untold losses in unrealized revenue based on poor site performance.
  • Untold losses in brand damage to multiple clients whose sites were compromised.
