Acquia

It is particularly useful for quickly setting up environments that need significant customization and set up for continuous delivery. I would say Acquia is less appropriate for smaller scale sites that wouldn't necessarily need the separated environments.

Clickability

Overall this works well for media and newspaper websites that get less than 100 million pageviews a month. Also if you have your own developer and artist on staff you can really create exceptional websites, however it isn't required. There is a steep learning curve due to lack of published examples like other programming languages such as ruby, php etc. For most of your data entry and content editors the learning curve is minimal and can be taught in hours. Price is going to be a huge factor in determining does this make sense for your organization because you have to take how much traffic you have into account. If you stay within your limits great, if you exceed them media and bandwidth costs can begin to bloat your budget and make this a less attractive solution.

Cons

  • It was difficult getting Varnish caches to clear because we used a CDN.
  • Their highest tiers can be quite expensive.
  • They leverage a Drupal multi-site, but a distro-based solution such as the one offered by Pantheon is more enterprise ready.

  • Version Control
  • Release Planning when huge number of templates need to be pushed to production
  • Velocity Scripting used to create website templates could be improved

As a Drupal Web Developer, I have not encountered or been exposed to any other hosting solution that could surpass the benefits of having a site hosted on Acquia Cloud. Although, for any side-project or low-cost freelance gigs, I cannot expect that I'll always have the option of recommending Acquia Cloud, and that's okay. While I am at work and trying to help our team gain more exposure to my companies' extensive list of clients, when we have the fortune of adding another Drupal-based client to our roster, getting those clients on Acquia Cloud makes every other aspect of building or modifying their school website that much easier

I gave it a 7 because it has some positive qualities and some qualities to work on. One positive thing about Clickability is that it allows us to manage three different websites together, and have one article appear on all three sites. That can really expedite workflow. At the same time, there is room for improvement with clunky targeting, multiple URLs (on one website), and occasional bugs. Page-building could be easier.

I have used 8 other CMS at this point and I only found one other to be easier to use and they are not for this type of market.

I found that some agents were better then others, usually you have an account representative and that I would consider level 1 support. To get really complex answers you need to talk with an engineer.

Have a developer on staff to work with them, even if you are not designing your site yourself.

I think it is on par with what I did with Sharepoint. Sharepoint was not the easiest and you have to do many things twice to get it to actually display. I think the easiest I have used is Wordpress. They make mobile very easy and allow for quick changes and are very social friendly. The issues I have with Wordpress is that they don't have the power of the Clickability programing. Drupal I haven't used but we are going to start using them next year. Going forward it sounds like it will be more streamlined and allow for easy mobile and social sharing with Drupal
