In my experience, if you have a talented team of Drupal developers or even a single Drupal developer who has a firm grasp of Drupal, and you are an enterprise-level business or entity, there is no better solution out there. Although I failed to mention cost previously, which is certainly a consideration. If you are serious about your site and you have thousands or hundreds of thousands of site-visitors, the cost may not be an obstacle. For smaller organizations, or non-profits/NGOs, the cost may be prohibitive and you may want to explore a less expensive vendor, such as my second-choice, Pantheon, or even RackSpace (I live in San Antonio, and a good portion of the San Antonio Drupal User's Group is made up of some extremely talented Drupal developers; so I had to include them in here somewhere).

DNN Platform

Well suited to large enterprise website or web application developments. Less well suited to smaller site which would be better catered for by something like Wordpress.

Pros

  • Drupal expertise
  • Products that have ease of use
  • Solid systems built on AWS

  • Very easy to use CMS - Ease of use is paramount with CMS products to minimise on support calls. Also the template structure of pages ensures that content editors cannot inadvertently corrupt the layout of the page.
  • Powerful application framework - The existence of APIs for all functionality within the CMS provides limitless scope in terms of developing bespoke applications which sit within the CMS.
  • Commercially supported option available - For larger clients, the comfort factor of having a direct line to the developers of the application is a big selling point.

Cons

  • New upgraded interface not as easy to use as the previous one.

  • Documentation of the APIs is sometimes quite sparse with varying levels of details provided depending on the function.
  • The liquid content feature stores content in the DNN cloud rather than on the application server. Convincing a client that the content isn't on their own servers (when trying to sell this feature) can be a challenge.

Alternatives Considered

Acquia is more fully featured and mature.

We chose DNN primarily because we were looking for an open source, scalable .NET based platform. This business decision was made 8 years ago and we have used it for every web development since. To date, no product provides such diversity of functionality and robustness against these requirements.

Return on Investment

  • Team time spent on deployment process is greatly reduced.
  • Reliable and scalable environment.

  • A distinguishing factor between DNN and other CMS products is the focus on DNN as a marketing platform rather than website CMS. This has lead to clients being able to measure the success of online marketing campaigns far more effectively than would otherwise have been the case.
