Acquia

Acquia is well-suited for any Drupal web platform. I think it best plays in the enterprise space, either for B2B or nonprofit/higher ed/government. Acquia is a great solution for smaller web platforms, as well, but the price is typically prohibitive in these scenarios.

Kentico

Well suited for marketers that do not have in-house web programming or web designing resources available. Less appropriate for people that aren't computer savvy (i.e. don't know how to use basic programs like email, Excel, PowerPoint) or for those who are not detail-oriented because if you skip certain steps when adding/editing content, your webpage won't render correctly and/or create negative impact for search engine optimization without you knowing it.

Pros

  • Great amount of support. We have had problems occur on the site, and the Acquia technicians have us up and running in no time.
  • The hosting service is quick. With access to Varnish and Memcache we have cut down our page load times.
  • Acquia also has great associate services with other companies like New Relic. This is great because we get more than one time of service!

  • Adding seach engine optimization information
  • Geomapping

Cons

  • "Scheduled" maintenance windows are often non-negotiable, vague and too abrupt.
  • The support escalation is slower than would be expected from a provider focused on enterprise availability.
  • The platform is rigidly composed in a way that serves Acquia's need to serve a wide customer base, and is thus sometimes not ideal for your use case.

  • UI - We are on 7.0 which has just about reached end of life, however v8 is out and am looking forward to seeing the UI made more intuitive
  • Terminology - Without reading the entire HUGE manual, the widgets and web parts available in the software are not self explanatory.
  • Steep Learning Curve - It takes months to become familiar enough with the system to diagnose minor issues.

Kentico is the "it" CMS of this year. I believe in its lasting power when recommending to client for a CMS that will last for 2-4 years

It seriously is one of the best interfaces I have ever used. I also love the fact that I can use UI personalization to secure any functionality by user or role that I don't want that role to have access to. The best part is the customization of the UI, I can add in any button, tab, or menu item I want through it, no code required.

Their support staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and will work with you until your issue is fixed. This could take a few phone calls back and forth, but they are very diligent in helping you.

Kentico has been my go to .NET CMS for nearly 8 years. Over that time I have also implemented nearly a dozen other CMS products for organizations. Through those experiences I still consider Kentico the best .NET CMS offering. They continue to improve on the product and keep the technologies up to date

Return on Investment

  • Rapid prototyping and feature development is simpler with Drupal and the Acquia platform is simple to extend for experimental sites.
  • By leveraging the enterprise hosting platform, we could focus on the feature development during the initial build out of the site, deferring the hosting complexities to a time when we would have more bandwidth.

  • Kentico has enabled faster speed to market for SMEs. They are empowered to enter content them selves while still having that content go through editorial review to ensure tone of voice and brand are maintained.
  • Deploying Kentico has freed up web developer resources from manual content entry enabling them to build more useful solutions to support the business efforts
  • Tapping into the Kentico event pipelne allows us to trigger external system events when product content is published.
