Acquia

Acquia is well-suited for any Drupal web platform. I think it best plays in the enterprise space, either for B2B or nonprofit/higher ed/government. Acquia is a great solution for smaller web platforms, as well, but the price is typically prohibitive in these scenarios.

Magento Open Source

Definitely well suited to larger e-commerce stores, in particular where multiple store-fronts are needed. Not so well suited to smaller online shops

Pros

  • Acquia has a variety of products and services that serve a variety of clients that span across many industries. The wide variety of use cases, supported by hundreds of case studies, make selling Acquia to our customers very easy.
  • Acquia's platform is secure, scalable, and designed specifically for Drupal allowing us to get projects started much smoother and quicker.
  • Acquia is always innovating and providing new products for their entire suite. Acquia's LIFT product is a game changing platform that is starting to provide a personalization solution meant for any size client and project website.

  • Magento 2 CE has a very robust document workflow which mirrors most mid-large ERP systems. There's a "papertrail" which mimics your business processes, and each part of the process is exposed to the API which makes for some great integration potential.
  • Magento 2 CE is also great for tracking customer history, saves a record for each and allows you to understand customer interests better.
  • Magento 2 CE is highly expandable, with a full marketplace of free and premium modules that should accomplish some pretty niche sales or service goals.

Cons

  • Acquia's pricing is sporadic across each product offering and for each industry vertical. Making pricing more standard across the board would help alleviate some of the doubt from our clients when they go to Acquia's site to see different products.
  • Acquia's BLT is a new and innovative product, but still lacks a lot of use cases. This comes with more implementation examples which will definitely come with time.
  • There is sometimes an inconsistency among different Acquia sales people and account managers. This results in a vastly different experience when bringing clients to Acquia. Mixed with Acquia's strange salesperson geographic/industry allocation, this has caused confusion for us and our clients. We'd love to see Acquia reps be more consistent across the board.

  • The community around Magento is very poor compared to other software. We migrated to WooCommerce and definitely there's more support there. More plugins, extensions, developers, etc., and at a reasonable price. This is one of the key points why we migrated. Magento is very expensive and slow to develop here. For WooCommerce there are plugins for everything, from popular analytics software to loyalty. This is a HUGE point to consider.
  • Debugging is painful. Some times you get an error that shut downs your entire store, and why did it happen? No clue. There's no documentation, there are 20,000+ files and at least for us, the framework on which it is built is not that user-friendly. This is expensive and there are not that many options compared to other software.
  • Changing the design or making changes is also very hard, because of the framework, the many files, and how complex Magento is.

As a Drupal Web Developer, I have not encountered or been exposed to any other hosting solution that could surpass the benefits of having a site hosted on Acquia Cloud. Although, for any side-project or low-cost freelance gigs, I cannot expect that I'll always have the option of recommending Acquia Cloud, and that's okay. While I am at work and trying to help our team gain more exposure to my companies' extensive list of clients, when we have the fortune of adding another Drupal-based client to our roster, getting those clients on Acquia Cloud makes every other aspect of building or modifying their school website that much easier

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Alternatives Considered

Acquia provides much more for the investment. The support and services they provide make them the best choice in choosing a platform to host your Drupal sites. Services like Pantheon may have some new tools or cool features. But Acquia always seems to come out with those features without the trouble of having the "growing pains" that come with them.

When compared to WooCommerce, we used Magento as we're able to have more control over our product listings, category listings, and shipping options

Return on Investment

  • Increased employee efficiency
  • Faster time to market for campaigns
  • Cheaper infrastructure costs

  • It definitely let us start with a decent store and scale from 0 to 15,000 products without many performance issues. But that comes with a cost: we were unable to change the design of the checkout, SEO was poor, and adding banners or more store-related things was very time consuming.
  • Debugging is hard and you will break your head with some errors that break your store, and you don't know how to solve them. This was one of the reasons why we left it.
