Acquia

Acquia is well-suited for any Drupal web platform. I think it best plays in the enterprise space, either for B2B or nonprofit/higher ed/government. Acquia is a great solution for smaller web platforms, as well, but the price is typically prohibitive in these scenarios.

Not appropriate for cloud deployments.Would be great for companies stuck in 2004 or companies who are prejudiced against open source giants in this space like Elasticsearch.

Pros

  • Reduced our internal development timelines and time to market by 80%
  • Decreased overall content management and marketing workflow schedules
  • Improved site performance by more than 110%

  • If you are nostalgic for 2004 style, closed source, poorly documented, ultra-proprietary, "enterprise"-ey type apps...this will be for you.

Cons

  • Account support is limited on the Cloud Professional plan and requires you to purchase support tickets for the smallest issues, whereas other providers usually provide basic support free of charge.
  • Acquia is very expensive, so unless you're an enterprise level partner, then it is likely out of your budget.
  • The online documentation could use a refresh in design and can be frustrating to search through for answers.

  • Draconian licensing methods; license is tied to IP address of one of the network interfaces so this product is incompatible with cloud deployment.
  • Very poor documentation - we've never been able to get to the bottom of an issue in a "self service" manner by using the available support documentation. We're always at the mercy of the sub-par helpdesk.
  • Doesn't lend itself to automation - configuration is some obscure format that is impossible to automate

Alternatives Considered

We evaluated multiple content management solutions, and Drupal was the best fit for our needs.

Elasticsearch is scalable, ready for cloud deployments, and documentation is readily available and comprehensive. Our using HP Autonomy is based on the sunk cost fallacy.

Return on Investment

  • Increased employee efficiency
  • Faster time to market for campaigns
  • Cheaper infrastructure costs

  • Every change related to Autonomy is mired down by the inefficient but necessary exchange with product support personnel.
