Acquia

Acquia is well-suited for any Drupal web platform. I think it best plays in the enterprise space, either for B2B or nonprofit/higher ed/government. Acquia is a great solution for smaller web platforms, as well, but the price is typically prohibitive in these scenarios.

Oracle Commerce Cloud

At the moment I don't know of any scenario where it is not well suited. Maybe because of missing functionalities which will come in a different release. I would recommend postponing using Commerce Cloud. But as development usually takes place in Sprints, at least in our projects, I can recommend to start implementing the basic and start with the missing functionalities as soon as they are included in the new Cloud version. But this needs to be aligned with Oracle. So an assessment needs to be done upfront.
In any case, I can always recommend going with OCC, keeping in mind the other integrated products offered by Oracle.

Pros

  • Hosting
  • Support
  • Specially tuned environments
Eric Steinborn profile photo
  • OCC has internationalization capabilities and makes it easy to build multinational and multilingual online shops.
  • A business user can easily extend the catalog structure by adding new product attributes. They can also change the look and feel/design of the page without development.
  • It is easy to add new functionalities by creating some widgets which can be uploaded to the target environment. So it is very easy to extend the payment gateway and add new payment providers.
  • Release cycles are much shorter and less CRs are needed.

Cons

  • Account support is limited on the Cloud Professional plan and requires you to purchase support tickets for the smallest issues, whereas other providers usually provide basic support free of charge.
  • Acquia is very expensive, so unless you're an enterprise level partner, then it is likely out of your budget.
  • The online documentation could use a refresh in design and can be frustrating to search through for answers.

  • Initial implementation for us has been particularly expensive, and requires the use of multiple partners. Onboarding and initial build out can be difficult, with some potential far-reaching errors.
  • We've discovered from others in our use case, that if an error is made in initial product definition and hierarchy setup, they live in the instance permanently.
  • Specifically, within search, it will only search 'products,' so things like warranties, articles, or other content wouldn't show up unless literally everything is an independent product.

As a Drupal Web Developer, I have not encountered or been exposed to any other hosting solution that could surpass the benefits of having a site hosted on Acquia Cloud. Although, for any side-project or low-cost freelance gigs, I cannot expect that I'll always have the option of recommending Acquia Cloud, and that's okay. While I am at work and trying to help our team gain more exposure to my companies' extensive list of clients, when we have the fortune of adding another Drupal-based client to our roster, getting those clients on Acquia Cloud makes every other aspect of building or modifying their school website that much easier

Alternatives Considered

Acquia is a leader in managed Drupal hosting, knowledge and supporting infrastructure.

We weighed a few different options, including adjusting our own custom solution, but ultimately chose OCC due to Oracle's backing and integration with other Oracle items, which we also acquired (ERP, project management, etc.). Really, it's about a stable ecosystem with a massive amount of resources behind it - we're confident that any issues we run into can either be easily fixed, or it's a large enough ecosystem with users that there's an acceptable workaround that someone already has found. AI integration out-of-the-box is pretty great, too.

Return on Investment

  • Team time spent on deployment process is greatly reduced.
  • Reliable and scalable environment.
Lincoln Souza profile photo
  • We anticipate mobile traffic bounce rate to drop significantly and conversion rates to increase. We're still to early on in our implementation to confirm these findings.
