Acquia

It is particularly useful for quickly setting up environments that need significant customization and set up for continuous delivery. I would say Acquia is less appropriate for smaller scale sites that wouldn't necessarily need the separated environments.

SDL Tridion Sites

I think it is really well suited for users who have multiple sites that need to inherit from a parent site, and want easy mass publishing options with the opportunity to also localize/personalize content to a lower level site.

Pros

  • Deployment management is user friendly and developer extensible.
  • Rudimentary monitoring and logging is user friendly and accessible.
  • The Acquia team is on top of emerging threats, and where possible, silently mitigates the worst of them.

  • Tridion gives you full capability to build content pages through the use of their component sections that can be used as a building block approach.
  • The publishing pipelines were very effective when dealing with various environments of dev, qa, staging and production.
  • I found the internal newsletter management to be very helpful to customer and engagement outreach right within the CMS platform.

Cons

  • The knowledge base has improved over the years, but its ease of use could be better.
  • The backend tool UI needs a new "coat of paint".
  • Having more site environments to work with would be great.
Tory Trone profile photo
  • A lot of steps to link components with pages
  • Ability to delete PDFs from server very cumbersome, unlike regular pages
  • Having difficulty manipulating images and special text such as bulleted lists next to each other -- they don't play well together!

Drupal is designed to grow with our changing needs and technology trends. Our hope is that as new features are needed, we'll be able to adapt as we grow

I don't play a role in the renewal decision on this product, but as an employee who uses it on a daily basis, I have no problem in it's continued use.

The editor user interface is very user friendly and in-site editing makes simple updates fast and easy. The extensibility of Tridion is a big plus and the ability to add our own options into the default Tridion interface helps us integrate with external systems. Finally, the user permissions and security system helps us deploy it within our large organization.

Alternatives Considered

  1. Setting up a local development environment with Drupal is easy and cheap
  2. Setting up an efficient development/deployment process is easy.
  3. Theming SharePoint is extremely difficult.
  4. Many SharePoint modules (aka webparts) are quirky and don't work as expected.
  5. Lists and libraries are quirky and also often do not work as expected.
  6. SharePoint is slow and does not give you real access to the database that powers it.

Adobe does a great job in managing sites. Its user interface for authors is intuitive and leaps and bounds better than SDL Tridions new 2013 UI. The ease of install and management makes Adobe CQ a much better product. However, Adobe CQ (AEM) has limitations. It cannot scale as well as SDL Tridion does when managing content in the MM of pages. Also, it forces you to use the CQ UI. If you want to create different experiences and leverage code, it becomes difficult, but still do able. In general, i would recommend Adobe CQ over SDL Tridion for almost all companies but the large multi-brand companies.

Return on Investment

  • Team time spent on deployment process is greatly reduced.
  • Reliable and scalable environment.

  • SDL Tridion has a positive impact as it was used for a multi-brand company. The leverage model saved lots of money in managing code and content. People were not spending time recreating code and content.
