Acronis Backup

If you don't have to manage your client's email and their email archiver Acronis works very well. If you're looking for just a backup service for what's on a particular computer then Acronis is perfect. It is easy to use, so newcomers are not overwhelmed with features. It does not include as robust features as Barracuda and Cloudberry, but it does work well as just a backup.

Ansible

Ansible did a great job helping us patch simple security vulnerabilities on many servers. The code for the fix were no more than about 100 lines. We patched each vulnerability in about 10 minutes. We patched both the HeartBleed/OpenSSH along with the Shellshock Bash vulnerability on 200+ servers in a few days.

Ansible

  • It is very lightweight so it is great for running simple repetitive tasks such as restarting services, copying files, or running simple shell commands.
  • Ansible is fantastic for deploying servers in a cloud environment. The modules are very simple and easy to understand and deploying server images is surprisingly fast.
  • Ansible provides phenomenal documentation and has a very supportive community that works diligently to make modules as lightweight as possible without removing functionality.

Cons

Acronis Backup

  • The web interface is slow and can kick you off from time to time
  • I do find that the error messages are hard to decipher if/when a backup is unsuccessful. However, support is very good in helping out the solution
  • The user interface is not intuitive enough to find failures in backups or track logs with alerts or errors

Ansible

  • Ansible is still in it's infancy as an open source automation tool compared to some of the more well-known competitors. This does lead to needing to create custom modules or utilizing some modules outside of their normal intended use to perform tasks.
  • Since Ansible runs each task individually over SSH, if you have a playbook with a large number of tasks to perform it can be a lengthier process due to some significant wait time between tasks. A simple solution is obviously to eliminate as many of these tasks as possible or break them up into separate play books.

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Out of the box, Ansible can be slow over a bad connection, as it's establishing an SSH connection to the target server for each little task. There are some adjustments you can make to the defaults that greatly improve performance. And if you run Ansible on the same network as the target (i.e. by using a jump box or Jenkins server), then it can be crazy fast. I'd give it a 10 for speed except that it does require these adjustments first.

We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

Implementation

I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Ansible

We selected Ansible over Chef as our current company size does not have a need for an extensive product like Chef. I do feel like Chef does a lot of things better than Ansible, but I also believe this is due to Ansible being a newer technology. Ansible also offers much lower overhead and the learning curve is much lower

For the majority of smaller companies, this solution is the best fit. If a company begins to have numerous servers and a large amount of data, this solution may no longer be the best fit.
