Acronis Backup

If you don't have to manage your client's email and their email archiver Acronis works very well. If you're looking for just a backup service for what's on a particular computer then Acronis is perfect. It is easy to use, so newcomers are not overwhelmed with features.It does not include as robust features as Barracuda and Cloudberry, but it does work well as just a backup.

AppAssure

AppAssure works well for quick access to point in time backups of Windows machines without having to do a complete restore. The virtual standby function is useful as a disaster recovery or high availability solution. Recent upgrades to the product and rebranding to Rapid Recovery look promising. If your Linux machines are mission [critical] make sure your administrators test restores so they can perform them in a timely manner should the need arise.

Pros

  • User-friendly interface makes it easy to manage.
  • Easy to restore files/systems.
  • Acronis supports mobile devices such as Android and Apple.

  • It's good when there are no issues with the backup. It works well with file level restores if you can get the systems backed up without any corruptions.

Cons

  • Not a lot of information about the reports unless you want them emailed.
  • Adding more to their knowledge base would be helpful.
  • The cost can be expensive if you have a lot of customers.

  • My biggest pet peeve is when the agent on a protected machine stops working. These failures don't show up on my daily report. I need to check the GUI to insure all the agents are talking to the core. Killing the agent process on the protected machine, then starting the service always seems to get them talking once again.
  • Linux support is limited to specific distributions. We often have to enlist AppAssure Technical Support to get our Linux VMs protected.
  • Dell releases patches to both the core and agents. The GUI reports the version of the version level but nothing about any applied patches.

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

Usability

I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Our initial installation really was not optimum. With the help from Dell Profession Services we were able to get our implementation sized correctly and better understand how to get better deduplication results

Alternatives Considered

Barracuda Cloud Essentials has email security, archiving, and allows users to manage their own spam email. Barracuda also comes with a backup feature and it all works together under one roof. Barracuda has been our alternative to other major services on the market. Acronis does well as a backup service, but Barracuda provides us a much more broader experience as an IT client.

We had Replay in our environment already and the price was right. We figured it might be good to stick with one vendor. Replay was a good product and saved us a couple times with the VM exports. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about AppAssure - anything but headache dealing with support daily.

This a great tool to do a well managed back up procedure and to save time and money with reports and de-duplication procedures that can take a lot of time and effort. I do really recommend this tool for Servers and Database solutions works smoothly
