Acronis Backup

I actually think that it works great for most scenarios.

The integration to Exchange can be rather difficult. When a new version is released, this process is complicated from the fact that there are several agents that have to be installed to work with Exchange. This is particularly true if you want the ability to perform a GLR restore. All agents must be installed, which requires a reboot, then then new agents installed and configured.

Pros

  • Recover files and folders directly from File Explorer
  • Easy and Quick Installation

  • Avamar performs data deduplication on the remote host. This greatly reduces the amount of traffic that each backup requires. This even applies to the virtual environment through change block tracking. Backup times are reduced from hours to minutes.
  • The management interface makes it easy to configure and maintain data retention periods. Many times certain data must be kept for an extended period of time. There is a specific menu for managing retention periods.
  • The system is able to recover itself from a hard failure with virtually no loss of backups. There is a checkpoint taken each day that provides a recovery point in the event of a catastrophic failure. Since this is a node based system, the loss of more than one node could require a recovery be performed.
  • While another grid must be purchased, the replication utility allows all backups to be replicated to another grid at a remote location. This ensures the resilience of the backups in the event there is the loss of the primary data center.

Cons

  • RTO lags a little bit behind the speeds that are claimed in the literature
  • Remote management could be better
  • Cloud storage should be included
  • Lack of popular 3rd-party cloud backup targets

  • The client interface has constant JAVA issues and can be slow and chunky. We have often had issues with current versions of JAVA breaking it so it will not even run.
  • The backup clients are split out for function. Although this makes them light, it also makes it cumbersome to upgrade clients. The naming scheme can also be confusing for the clients.

Acronis Backup9.1

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

I have been using the product for over five years. This has performed so well that with the current system reaching its End-of-Life with EMC next year, I have proposed replacing it with the latest version of the product. Now that it integrates with Data Domain, the cost has been greatly reduced. Instead of the need to purchase many nodes, one Data Domain can replace them creating a significant cost savings.

Usability

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Support

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

Implementation

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered

We found the pricing, pre-sales technical support, customer service, billing, and post-sales technical support to be above par as compared to almost all other enterprise backup solutions. Some were equal or better in one or more areas, but no one had as high of marks as Acronis across the board

I started with Avamar as a tape backup replacement. I had drives at each location and a tape robot at the central data center. Moving to disk backup with no tape switch out was incredible. With tech today, almost all backup is disk backup. Avamar's quality hardware and deduplication technology has kept it ahead of the curve with other competitors even today. When I have had to call EMC for support they have been quick and efficient in solving the issue. The amount of time saved from going from tape to centralized disk, frees up so much of my time and keeps me from chasing my tail finding tapes.

Return on Investment

  • Great, easy to use backup solution for small to medium businesses
  • Can be cumbersome for management with complex deployments
  • Requires physical interaction to swap media and obtain offsite backups (unless sending data offsite is an option)

  • Much less time spent managing backups (Configuration and tape changes).
  • Successful backups. 99+% of all our backups are successful
