Acronis Backup

I actually think that it works great for most scenarios.

Ask about flexibility of implementation and security of data storage. The user should get the assurance of the data privacy. These are well suited by Druva.

Pros

  • Acronis backup allows you to set up several backups at once to different locations for redundancy.
  • It allows you to easily search the local network to find backup locations.
  • It allows you to set up several different time frames for backups ie: weekly, monthly, daily etc

  • Druva is, for the most part, invisible to the end user. The majority of our end users have no idea what it is or what it's doing, until they have an issue and we can quickly restore their data. We're starting to educate our users, showing them that they can add other folders to the backup and can restore their own files if necessary. Very user friendly.
  • Druva makes the machine migration process simple. Full restore of the user's desktop, files and settings with the click of a button based on their last backup.
  • Implementing Druva was simple using SCCM and AD integration. The install is silent, no log in for the end user and the backups just happen.

Cons

  • Stability - Although we have seen improvements in the recent later releases, we did experience stability issues in the not too distant past.
  • We have seen regular warning messages whilst attempting VM backups - "An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine".
  • Upon contacting Acronis support - we were told this is a VMware issue...not much help. The resolution? Install the Acronis agent on the VM locally.
  • This creates a non-standard rollout across your estate. I do not know why this happens to one VM over another but it would be good to get this resolved.
  • We have a Linux appliance based Acronis solution. We have needed to contact Acronis support on a number of occasions for some support and the Acronis 1st level support teams are very much Windows based. They do not have much experience on the Linux appliance version of their system.
  • If you do go down the Linux platform with your Acronis - make sure you have sufficient in house Linux skills to maintain and perform upgrades.

  • Initial backups can be lengthy and consume a lot of bandwidth. This is true for any endpoint backup system. Druva has methods of avoiding this (CloudCache) but with our workforce those methods didn't apply, we have too many field/remote users.

Likelihood to Renew

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 2 answers
We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

Implementation

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered

We selected Acronis due to our consultant's familiarity with the product, the ability to get a perpetual license, and the flexibility of different PC/server backups managed through a single interface.

Druva intstalls and integrates a little cleaner than ArcServe Continuity Cloud. The interface on Druva inSync is a little cleaner overall, but ArcServe does allow a more detailed interface for IT personnel. Both have similar scalability options and provide similar compliance and security features.ArcServe might be a little faster when it comes to moving data to and from the cloud but the simplicity of operation in Druva makes it a better choice for our targeted number of users.

Return on Investment

  • Acronis has already saved me a ton of downtime especially with employees that work in the office. We had our server just up and crash over a weekend and could not get it back on-line. Went and got new hard drives and took the Acronis bootable CD and were able to restore the server onto the new drives from the external backup drive in a matter of hours instead of days and with no loss of business information or files, everything ran as smooth as it did with no hiccups before the crash.

  • I find the price to be well worth the investment
  • The peace of mind fare outweighs the cost
  • I can see no negative impact
