Acronis Backup

We have used this to recover a folder that was accidentally deleted by a user. Brilliant and works fast too.

Carbonite EVault

A key question is, "how much critical data needs to be backed up?". A follow-up question might be, "what impact would it have on your business and reputation if you were to lose this data or take more than a few days to recover?"If a company's data is not critical or valuable to the success of their business, then this is not a good solution.

Pros

  • Image failing hard drives
  • Move existing hard drives to new SSD
  • Local backup of existing workstations
No photo available
  • The end-user experience is as simple and robust as I have ever seen from a backup solution. The end-user dashboard, should you choose to allow them access, is intuitive and granular.
  • eVault has the best bandwidth management I have experienced. The endpoint target is available for all operating systems and is intelligent and efficient using very low overhead. It includes data de-dupe and encryption while using very little system resources. Combine these features with bandwidth throttling and you can backup a large amount of data over any size wire.
  • eVault's deployment options will fit any budget and size environment. You can deploy using your own hardware, even. They really focus on providing the right solution for each customer instead of making each customer fit into their pre-determined box.

Cons

  • Honestly it was very easy to use, if I had any recommendations it would be to make the recovery process a little more intuitive. We still love the product.

  • The eVault process is so thorough, sometimes a simple deployment can take much longer than a customer expects.
  • Their solutions in the past have been targeted to mid-sized to enterprise sized budgets. They now have solutions to fit the small business, but don't market them well.

Likelihood to Renew

Acronis Backup9.1

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

I trust EVault's product. It has been battle tested and proven. A backup is only as good as its ability to restore. EVault will restore your data when you need it, period.

Usability

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Support

Acronis Backup8.2

We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

Implementation

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered

We had in place a Symantec Backup Exec (2014) solution in place - this was running on a physical device with an attached tape library. This would be perfect for a smaller company needing cost-effective off-site storage.
But for us, this had a number of limitations:
1) User accountability - all user's actions within the backup system were untraceable as everything was complete as the generic user
2) Our estate had moved to a mainly virtual platform and installing agents onto each VM was not cost effective
3) Offsite replication was not an easy setup on the Symantec version we had
Acronis offered us a competitive price if we showed we were replacing a competitor's product to reinforce the business decision.

EVault is a cheaper and more reliable solution and has less management and moving parts than the other vendors.

Having all of my back-ups centrally located is amazing. Therefore, this can scale very easily.

Return on Investment

  • Acronis has already saved me a ton of downtime especially with employees that work in the office. We had our server just up and crash over a weekend and could not get it back on-line. Went and got new hard drives and took the Acronis bootable CD and were able to restore the server onto the new drives from the external backup drive in a matter of hours instead of days and with no loss of business information or files, everything ran as smooth as it did with no hiccups before the crash.

  • ROI on not using tapes and tape backup systems.
  • Cost of offsite storage and pickup/deliver of tapes
