Acronis Backup

I actually think that it works great for most scenarios.

Symantec DLP

Symantec Data Loss Prevention (DLP) works best when the entire organization (IT, Human Resources, etc.) is involved in the process and works the least when it is just the IT Security department involved. While it is good that Symantec DLP is modular and scalable this can also be a problem if the installation/configuration/etc., is not done correctly and not configured well. Please go to training or you will be a bit lost in the product as well.

Pros

  • Image based backups. After the initial backup, the backups happen quite quickly. This allows for multiple backups per day.
  • We have different classes of data which requires different retention policies. Acronis makes that easy to manage.
  • Restoration can be done directly to hardware or to a VM. This makes it easy to migrate a physical server to a VM.

  • Scalable -- Goes from small business to very large enterprises
  • Up to date -- Symantec has invested a lot of money and resources in keeping the product up to date and ahead of the curve
  • The best -- Leader of the Gartner Magic Quadrant

Cons

  • It can be a little expensive.
  • You have to install an agent on your servers.
  • I did not have great luck with it backing up Linux servers.

  • Feels like the user agent still needs work.
  • Report grouping for incidents.

Likelihood to Renew

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 2 answers
We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

Usability

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Support

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

Implementation

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered

Acronis does not slow your system down when running backups as Symantec did. Some people have an issue with CPU's being impacted but overall it's not an issue.

Symantec DLP is the best. Put it in a head to head competition and it will win. However it can be a bit more expensive than other products so don't compare on price, compare on quality of product.

Scalability

Acronis Backup7.2

For the majority of smaller companies, this solution is the best fit. If a company begins to have numerous servers and a large amount of data, this solution may no longer be the best fit.

Return on Investment

  • Great, easy to use backup solution for small to medium businesses
  • Can be cumbersome for management with complex deployments
  • Requires physical interaction to swap media and obtain offsite backups (unless sending data offsite is an option)

  • Found data that should have been protected or moved to a different location
  • Helped us understand what type of data is leaving the environment
