Acronis Backup

I actually think that it works great for most scenarios.

Veeam Backup

Veeam is wonderful in a Windows environment with VMware as the hypervisor. If you're using Exchange, Windows file services, MS SQL, and Active Directory virtualized in VMware (or Hyper-V allegedly but we don't have direct experience with that) it's a wonderful tool. However, if you're more in a mixed environment where some workloads are physical/native and others are virtualized it's not as effective. The upcoming version will include "Veeam Agents" for cloud hosted or physical environments, but those are unreleased and unproven so far.

Pros

  • Image based backups. After the initial backup, the backups happen quite quickly. This allows for multiple backups per day.
  • We have different classes of data which requires different retention policies. Acronis makes that easy to manage.
  • Restoration can be done directly to hardware or to a VM. This makes it easy to migrate a physical server to a VM.

  • Restoration is VERY easy with Veeam, much easier than other backup products that we use. Whether it's the Instant VM Recovery or one of the Backup Explorers (for File Server, Exchange, SQL, or AD) it's very simple and easy to restore files.
  • I like the flexibility of the Veeam Suite and how it fits well in any size company. A lot of our smaller businesses that we support only have a single Veeam server, while some of our bigger ones we have multiple Veeam servers and proxies.
  • As part of the Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) program, we are able to provide cloud storage to our customers as a very simple process. We can also do subscription based licensing for protected VMs which fits our MSP business model very well instead of perpetual licensing.

Cons

  • The cloud based backup and the local backup don't talk to each other. I can never get one answer on how much total cloud storage is being used by both the cloud managed endpoints and the locally managed endpoints.
  • Licensing could be easier to manage. Adding new licenses seems a bit manual.
  • Deploying agents doesn't always work from the console. I have to occasionally do a manual installation.
Kevin Cooper profile photo
  • I do not believe it works on VMWARE or physical servers
  • Cloud replication very expensive
  • Need to purchase hardware as well as software in order to use it

Likelihood to Renew

Acronis Backup9.1

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

We have already renewed the product. It does all that it promises to do, and we have not used all the available features available to use.

Usability

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Support

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

When I needed support I was able to call and get assistance from a live person very quickly. They were very helpful with all aspects of the software from installation and configuration issues to recovery and everyday maintenance issues

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Just follow the instructions and the software is super simple to install.

Alternatives Considered

We found the pricing, pre-sales technical support, customer service, billing, and post-sales technical support to be above par as compared to almost all other enterprise backup solutions. Some were equal or better in one or more areas, but no one had as high of marks as Acronis across the board

Previously used AppAssure. It did not have a user-friendly interface and we had issues with failed backups. Various issues arose when using our Dell storage appliance which caused conflicts with the deduplication that AppAssure provided. In addition, the overall backup speeds were much slower and caused our backups to run longer than expected.

Scalability

Acronis Backup7.2
Based on 24 answers
It appears to be very scalable. It has handled everything that we could throw at it, and believe me, we hit it hard during our initial testing phase. It has performed like a champ day in and day out for several years now. Even through upgrades, we have been able to handle our workloads seamlessly.
