Acronis Backup

I actually think that it works great for most scenarios.

Veritas Backup Exec

My rating would have been higher a few years ago, but nagging problems, primarily noticed since the switch back to Veritas, has increased my dissatisfaction. It is still a solid product for the SMB market. It is a wide variety of options that will fit into just about any scenario that you can think of. Licensing complexity continues to be a issue. It offers solid performance, reasonably good support and a decent interface once you are used to it

Pros

  • You can administer all of your backups from a single browser-based GUI. No matter what the instance of Acronis is - local agent install on a physical device .... a VM on a host or even an Apple device. Alerts can be set for errors or warnings for admins to act upon if necessary.
  • Restores can be undertaken in a number of ways which is really useful. You can restore a whole VM to the same host or a new one. You can convert physical machines to a VM and a very useful feature is the ability to dive into the backup file and pluck individual files and thus restore single files quickly - good for file servers etc.
  • One of the requirements was to have the ability to replicate the backup files to an off-site location - This can be set up easily within the backup plan eliminating the need (for us at least) for tape-based solutions.

  • Veritas Backup Exec's interface is very easy to use for a beginner to Disaster recovery.
  • The storage targeting is very easy to set up and manage. It is very user-friendly to make changes to the preferences of each job or all of the jobs at once.
  • The single file restores are very easy to set up and complete.

Cons

  • Does not recognize/individually backup MySQL Server software. Therefore, with my server if the database goes bad the entire server has to be restored. Apparently, Acronis only recognizes name-brand products.
  • Interface seems to be web-based. If the internet is down, the server cannot be restored.

  • Overwrite and retention does not always work as efficiently as it should, leading to manual deletion of older jobs on the media.
  • Occasional glitches with backups to external disks, needing to recreate device folders and redirect jobs.
  • Licensing is based on server and database count, no total data. If you have numerous servers and SQL databases and Exchange databases, you will have to buy licenses for each individual machine and instance of database.

Likelihood to Renew

Acronis Backup9.1

We have renewed our subscription over the course of a few years now. We used to use Backup Exec and it was tedious and difficult to obtain our backups when needed. Acronis just fits our environment style and the way we prefer to do business and use our third party software.

Usability

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
I give it a rating of 9 do to its ease of usability. It's ease of understanding how to setup - form - fit - and function. I have no sorrows when having to login to the console in order to setup a new backup schedule or retrieve and recover lost data.

Support

Acronis Backup8.2
Based on 1 answer
We have only had to contact support a hand full of times. The reason for this 9 out of 10 is do to how quickly and cooperative they have been on the rare occasion we needed to chat with them about our small questions or queries with potential issues do to the nature of our business.

Implementation

Acronis Backup9.1
Based on 1 answer
I don't have any real key 'insights' per say except that it wasn't difficult at all, and do not be afraid to dabble in its tools and settings. It is quite intuitive with built in common sense. I cannot say enough good things about our companies experience when using this backup software.

Alternatives Considered

Acronis is so much simpler in setting up a backup schedule. You can choose any preferred backup type according to your environment need. Dashboard will clearly indicate your backup status, progress, and an alert will be sent to you to inform you of the details of timing and progress. Simple restore no matter file or image level. With the assistance of acronis universal restore you can simply restore your environment across hardware with high success rate.

Symantec and Acronis are well matched, but Symantec is more flexible in designing jobs. Acronis creates images that are mountable whereas Symantec creates backup files that can be restored quickly and easily. Barracuda and Datto are "total data storage" backup options and include all necessary software to backup any server, but lots of data will require an expensive appliance. Symantec will backup any amount of data as long as your licensing for the agents and databases is accurate.

  • Great cost effective tool to utilize with external media. It provides backups for a low cost and does the job well.
  • This product is great as long as the administrator(s) are willing to do the manual effort of rotating media for offsite backups.
  • Restoration of data and servers has almost always gone to plan which is to be expected of an industry leading software.
