Acronis Backup Cloud

Acronis Backup Cloud is suited for backing up Windows Servers. Downtime is greatly decreased by using their virtualization options. You will need a Hyper-V enabled computer to virtualize, though, but this can be one of your general-use workstations. A Windows 10 Pro machine with 16 GB of RAM would do it for you.Or, if you have Macs that need to be backed up, you can do that as well. You can grab either full volume images, or files/folders.I can't really think of a scenario that you would not want Acronis Backup Cloud, except pre-Server 2012 OS's, since virtualization isn't supported on those older systems.

CommVault

With the implementation of Commvault, we have backed up more information than we ever have than when we were using NetBackup. The agents that Commvault has to back up different types of data is so vast that I could almost guarantee they have what you need to get the job done. Is is a very diverse software that fits nearly every environment. The ability to replicate to a disaster recovery site has proven its worth recently when we did a DR test and it was incredibly successful as opposed to the way we had to do it with NetBackup last year.

Pros

  • Quick Virtualization. Acronis can virtualize most systems and get you back up in 15-30 minutes.
  • Encryption of Backups. You own the encryption key, and Acronis doesn't - so not even Acronis employees can get into your cloud data. Encryption meets all HIPAA requirements for data protection.
  • Easy to resell. You can create accounts for individuals outside of the company to allow them access to their backup console. It's very easy to set up, and clients are happy with how easy it is to use.

  • Commvault has made their software increasingly easier to navigate with what seems to be every service pack revision. I have found more shortcuts to places I need to navigate to with every update. That makes this a very functional software.
  • Commvault also gives very detailed logs to look over if there is an issue. They also give the ability to send logs very easily to support through their software. No need to manually collect logs and email them out, as it is all in the software GUI.
  • Commvault reporting and dashboards are very detailed, showing things like front end footprint and deduplication / compression rates. It shows the amount of disk used and how much is freed up on a daily basis.
  • The Commvault job controller allows for a very customized look into your current running backups. They have the ability to create multiple filters so you can apply them quickly to just see what you need.

Cons

  • The website is pretty slow and will kick you off sometimes. I know they are working on this. For now, this is the biggest problem we have with Acronis.
  • Their support team isn't great. It can take a while to get an issue resolved, although issues do not happen frequently.

  • CommVault needs provide easier ways to download software. Instead of having to download the entire software suite, I would like the option for individual components to be available for download.
  • In our very secure IT worlds we live in, CommVault should provide better ways to upload logs to their support site. Companies usually highly restrict being able to access much on the internet from within their data centers.

The cost savings we realized from moving to this software has us hooked - it does everything we need it to do on a very high level (virtualization, for example) and is very low cost for us.

Not a simple solution to use and one with a lexicon and vocabulary you will need to be familiar with in order to use the product to its potential.

Alternatives Considered

Acronis Backup Cloud has more features than eFolder, and is less than 1/3rd of the cost. In terms of restores, it's faster than eFolder if you use the local component. The restoration component is much better than Carbonite's, which has a tendency to drop connection midway through a file download. Acronis lets you restore to original locations, to a new location on the same device, or just as a download through your browser. Acronis Backup Cloud beats everything else we've tried, and it's unbelievable how affordable it is.

Overall, Commvault is easier to implement and easier to manage than those products. The stability also seems to be must better. Upgrades are easily done on Commvault and can be done by the backup support team as opposed to relying on the system support teams. Reporting with Commvault is significantly better than the products listed. Cloud support is significantly better. The features of Commvault are more advanced. Commvault seems to be 2-3 years ahead of the competition.

Return on Investment

  • ROI has been huge. The cost is incredibly cheap, and we saved $1500/month by switching.
  • With a heavy impact on profits, we're able to bundle this backup plan into our basic server management plans with no additional cost, which raises the value of our offerings significantly.

  • I cannot speak specifically on the impact CommVault has had on our ROI. Overall, it's been a very positive experience and I hope that carries over into our ROI.
