Acronis Backup Cloud

Acronis is a great solution for organizations with an IT department or consultant. It works great for IT administrators that have multiple data centers so they can have a central backup location. Acronis would not be a great fit for organizations with low bandwidth or slow internet speeds

Perfect for a smaller company having no solid document server. Without any major costs you can go from 3 to 30 to 60 users with the same hardware or VPS and if self-managed, no payment per user per month. Less appropriate when users absolutely require collaborative editing of documents. Pick Office365 or G Suite (Google Documents for work) instead.

Pros

  • The Acronis backup console is easy to use.
  • Acronis offers an online recovery console to access items quickly and easily.
  • The ability to backup and restore Office 365 mailboxes.
  • Creating backup plans and schedules is simple.
  • Email alerts notifying administrators on backup failures.
  • The backup deduplication and compression features is one of industries best.

  • Runs fine on a inexpensive Linux VPS with a few CPU cores and little RAM and is able to serve well for dozens of users. The scalability at almost no extra cost is perfect.
  • Sync clients are available for all major platforms: MS Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and mobile apps on Android and iOS are available too and work very well. We use all these platforms and are able to exchange documents transparently.
  • Initial setting up the environment for users - such as creating a few user groups, virtual users owning particular folders and assigning users to these groups, is quite easy and quick. Auto-sync of data to local devices on all platforms is also perfect, users don't have to manually select anything, default is to sync (or admin can set on the desktop clients how big folders are auto-synced).

Cons

  • The fact Acronis is an OS client base backup, which leads to more backup failures. Although most issues can be corrected with restarting services.
  • Recovering backups from the cloud(internet) is a lot slower then acessing local backups.
  • The backup error reports are not detailed enough to help administrators fix issues.

  • I think the UI is a little outdated now
  • The usage on our server seemed quite large compared to others
  • I think adding a built in file editor would be super useful

The cost savings we realized from moving to this software has us hooked - it does everything we need it to do on a very high level (virtualization, for example) and is very low cost for us.

Regarding the community edition, there is a reasonably good support on the IRC, forums and in the issue section on Github. Perhaps a much more individual approach would be available if the premium support was chosen and the instance of the server was provided by the Owncloud company that also offers some premium extensions, not available generally. However, we did not need this level of support yet.

Alternatives Considered

I believe Acronis has the easiest interface to control backups and restores. The backup solution that didn't work the best for us was Symantec Backup. The other backup solutions (Unitrends, Barracuda, and Veeam) have similar backup features as Acronis and are recommended. Uniterends backup is more advanced and can be complicated not for organizations without IT staff.

ownCloud is one of the only self-hosted solutions worth it. It is open source and free, meaning that anyone with a Linux VM or an old laptop can host its own feature-rich cloud server. Many all-in-one firewalls will mix OwnCloud and CrashPlan, joining document management and backup. I backup my ownCloud using CrashPlan to my dad's computer so I can restore files in case of a crash.
