Acronis Backup Cloud

Acronis Backup Cloud is suited for backing up Windows Servers. Downtime is greatly decreased by using their virtualization options. You will need a Hyper-V enabled computer to virtualize, though, but this can be one of your general-use workstations. A Windows 10 Pro machine with 16 GB of RAM would do it for you.Or, if you have Macs that need to be backed up, you can do that as well. You can grab either full volume images, or files/folders.I can't really think of a scenario that you would not want Acronis Backup Cloud, except pre-Server 2012 OS's, since virtualization isn't supported on those older systems.

Veeam Backup

Veeam Backup is a great addition to most environments. I would be hesitant in an environment where Veeam doesn't officially support a specific product class or OS level. You want to make sure if there is an issue that the Veeam Support is able to assist you.

Pros

  • The Acronis backup console is easy to use.
  • Acronis offers an online recovery console to access items quickly and easily.
  • The ability to backup and restore Office 365 mailboxes.
  • Creating backup plans and schedules is simple.
  • Email alerts notifying administrators on backup failures.
  • The backup deduplication and compression features is one of industries best.

  • Virtual Server Backup and Replication/Copy: Veeam is a leader in the virtual server backup environments for the past 7-10 years. With an agent-less configuration and multiple options to reduce the impact on your production environment, VEEAM is the clear choice for protecting your data.
  • VEEAM offers multiple options to manage replicas of your most critical data, with failover, fail back, commit, and failover plans. This adds a great value on HyperV Farms where replication management lacks visibility into the current state and operation. You can see what is going on as the replication occurs.
  • VEEAM extended their product into AIX, Oracle, Physical, and Office365 Environments (As well as other improvements). This is a quality you want to discover when picking a vendor to backup your expanding infrastructure.
  • Sure Backup offers the ability to boot the VMs up off the backup file in a Sandbox for user testing and validation. Veeam also offers the "Instant VM Recovery", which allows you to quickly restore a backup by mounting the backup file to the host and then once its up and operating storage migrate the VM data to production local or SAN/NAS storage.

Cons

  • More features needed - tapes support, more advanced deduplication

  • VEEAM has few shortcomings but if I were to select one, I would say tighter integration with their Veeam Sure Backup Options. Simplification on the setup of the networking for the sandbox and better validation for core apps such as AD, SQL, IIS, Oracle, Exchange.

The cost savings we realized from moving to this software has us hooked - it does everything we need it to do on a very high level (virtualization, for example) and is very low cost for us.

We really like the product and can't really complain about its performance at this point. We've also had it deployed for years and it would be difficult to migrate to another solution, not to mention hard to justify the cost of a new solution when this one is working as well as it is.

Overall we have been very pleased with the solution for our virtual infrastructure. I would not give it 10 because I am not really happy with the troubles we get into while backing up our physical servers directly.

Alternatives Considered

I believe Acronis has the easiest interface to control backups and restores. The backup solution that didn't work the best for us was Symantec Backup. The other backup solutions (Unitrends, Barracuda, and Veeam) have similar backup features as Acronis and are recommended. Uniterends backup is more advanced and can be complicated not for organizations without IT staff.

Veeam Backup & Replication is cheaper and easier to manage. A system admin can easily install, configure and manage Veeam Backup and Replication, while for CommVault, it is better you hire an expert.

Return on Investment

  • ROI has been huge. The cost is incredibly cheap, and we saved $1500/month by switching.
  • With a heavy impact on profits, we're able to bundle this backup plan into our basic server management plans with no additional cost, which raises the value of our offerings significantly.
Dan Gospe profile photo
  • We directly provide backups to customers, so having a reliable and low cost backup solution affects our bottom line directly in a positive way.
  • The ability to have confidence in our backup solution and knowing that in the event of a data loss we would be able to recovery quickly and easily is huge for our business.
  • Since moving to Veeam we have had to spend more engineer hours on management simply do to some extra failures that we wouldn't normally see on our old software. We've determined that it's worth it for the faster ability to recovery from failures, but we continue to look at ways to streamline the management process.
