Veritas Backup Exec

My rating would have been higher a few years ago, but nagging problems, primarily noticed since the switch back to Veritas, has increased my dissatisfaction. It is still a solid product for the SMB market. It is a wide variety of options that will fit into just about any scenario that you can think of. Licensing complexity continues to be a issue. It offers solid performance, reasonably good support and a decent interface once you are used to it

Pros

Acronis Backup Cloud

  • Up to date UI, convenient central management interface, web-based console (we use local web console)
  • Good to backup all machines (PC, windows server, Vmware) using a single tool

Veritas Backup Exec

  • You are able to do a full system restore as long as you monitor and make sure you are getting good full backups
  • Is a great product for doing down to a single file level restore for users who may have accidentally deleted a file of their shared drive for department
  • Is good product to use to backup your Exchange Server, I know we had server crash last year and lose data base and I was able to restore and get email back online with in 4 hours!
  • Their Customer support for SBE is great had issue two years ago that maintenance had lapsed and I was able to renew and get support need all with in two hours!

Cons

Acronis Backup Cloud

  • More features needed - tapes support, more advanced deduplication

Veritas Backup Exec

  • Sometimes difficult getting to the correct support staff. A more clear way to contact the right people for support would help.
  • As a reseller, the engagement process can sometimes be confusing. This happens very infrequently but it has happened.
  • Also as a reseller, there have been complaints that there is no uninstall tool when replacing another product with Symantec. Not sure if this has been fixed though.

The cost savings we realized from moving to this software has us hooked - it does everything we need it to do on a very high level (virtualization, for example) and is very low cost for us.

I would have given it a 10 but my organization doesn't currently use Symantec

Alternatives Considered

Acronis Backup Cloud

Acronis Backup Cloud has more features than eFolder, and is less than 1/3rd of the cost. In terms of restores, it's faster than eFolder if you use the local component. The restoration component is much better than Carbonite's, which has a tendency to drop connection midway through a file download. Acronis lets you restore to original locations, to a new location on the same device, or just as a download through your browser. Acronis Backup Cloud beats everything else we've tried, and it's unbelievable how affordable it is.

Veritas Backup Exec

Our version of Backup Exec lacked the appropriate VM support, although I believe that such support is better in 15 and 16 versions. We currently use a combination of Backup Exec and Acronis - our parent company uses Veeam.

Return on Investment

Acronis Backup Cloud

  • Easy to configure and install as well as setup.
  • Restorations can be very quick if self provided hardware is powerful.
  • Can require switching products if company has large growth as more endpoints require large cost investment.

  • The return has had a positive impact on our ROI. BE for our use is easy to deploy, manage and maintain.
