Acronis Backup Cloud

Acronis Backup Cloud is suited for backing up Windows Servers. Downtime is greatly decreased by using their virtualization options. You will need a Hyper-V enabled computer to virtualize, though, but this can be one of your general-use workstations. A Windows 10 Pro machine with 16 GB of RAM would do it for you.Or, if you have Macs that need to be backed up, you can do that as well. You can grab either full volume images, or files/folders.I can't really think of a scenario that you would not want Acronis Backup Cloud, except pre-Server 2012 OS's, since virtualization isn't supported on those older systems.

VMware SRM

It's quite well suited for a medium to large size VMWare virtualization infrastructure where your production infrastructure can be failed over to a disaster recovery site. There are other cheaper options for a smaller budget business. Also, for a non mission critical virtual infrastructure, you can simply use VM backups such as Veeam backups for restoring failed VMs

Pros

  • Quick Virtualization. Acronis can virtualize most systems and get you back up in 15-30 minutes.
  • Encryption of Backups. You own the encryption key, and Acronis doesn't - so not even Acronis employees can get into your cloud data. Encryption meets all HIPAA requirements for data protection.
  • Easy to resell. You can create accounts for individuals outside of the company to allow them access to their backup console. It's very easy to set up, and clients are happy with how easy it is to use.

  • Ease of configuration. You don't have to be a virtualization expert to learn how VMWare SRM is configured and executed.
  • Creation of multiple protection groups and recovery plans helps implementing recovery priority and partial/full site recovery as required.
  • No additional tasks for managing replication. SRM takes care of replication from failover site to old primary site automatically.

Cons

  • The fact Acronis is an OS client base backup, which leads to more backup failures. Although most issues can be corrected with restarting services.
  • Recovering backups from the cloud(internet) is a lot slower then acessing local backups.
  • The backup error reports are not detailed enough to help administrators fix issues.

The cost savings we realized from moving to this software has us hooked - it does everything we need it to do on a very high level (virtualization, for example) and is very low cost for us.

Sometimes we have to struggle explaining the problem and getting it resolved on priority. The overall quality of support team is not as good as it used to be in past.

Alternatives Considered

I believe Acronis has the easiest interface to control backups and restores. The backup solution that didn't work the best for us was Symantec Backup. The other backup solutions (Unitrends, Barracuda, and Veeam) have similar backup features as Acronis and are recommended. Uniterends backup is more advanced and can be complicated not for organizations without IT staff.

If SRM worked as advertised, it would be comparable, however, Veeam also provides you with the ability to create real time labs with your machines, and they can be accessed via a proxy. This allows you to failover some machines and test them from outside the DR bubble.

Return on Investment

  • It's been a great investment especially knowing our data is protected.
  • We no longer worry about upgrade storage hardware or devices.
Michael O'Riley profile photo
  • Our overall ROI seems to be pretty good, as ease of using VMWare SRM has helped us reducing cost of hiring separate virtualization experts. The task is being performed by our System Admins.
  • SRM steps execution was pretty smooth in our DR exercise. This has helped us achieve our RPO and RTO well under contracted limits.
