Acronis Backup Cloud

Acronis Backup Cloud is suited for backing up Windows Servers. Downtime is greatly decreased by using their virtualization options. You will need a Hyper-V enabled computer to virtualize, though, but this can be one of your general-use workstations. A Windows 10 Pro machine with 16 GB of RAM would do it for you.Or, if you have Macs that need to be backed up, you can do that as well. You can grab either full volume images, or files/folders.I can't really think of a scenario that you would not want Acronis Backup Cloud, except pre-Server 2012 OS's, since virtualization isn't supported on those older systems.

Zerto Virtual Replication

Zerto does an amazing job of making sure our critical systems stay up and protected. I'm not sure I'd want to spend the money that would be required on a license for a development server, but for those systems you just can't live without, Zerto is our go-to product.

Pros

  • Full image and bare-metal recovery backups for any physical or virtual server.
  • Physical to virtual and other tools built-in to make conversions / recoveries easier and more efficient.
  • Ability to spin up servers on the fly from recovery media.
  • Options to backup on premise as well as offsite to Acronis cloud.

  • The ability to replicate only delta changes enables us to replicate nearly 200 servers with minimal bandwidth usage and so reduces excessive network costs.
  • Being licensed to replicate multiple copies of a server enables us to keep costs down and use a single product for both DR and HA
  • Journaling enables simple point in time recovery to cope with user errors that would otherwise require a lengthy restore from backups
  • For some servers, the 30-day journaling now replaces traditional backup products, saving cost and enabling speedy recoveries

Cons

  • No option for on premises hardware BDR. This means recovery restorations rely on self-supplied hardware performance.
  • License per machine can get costly if large number of computers or servers.

  • Full site failover processing
  • Reports on what is protected and where and protection levels

The cost savings we realized from moving to this software has us hooked - it does everything we need it to do on a very high level (virtualization, for example) and is very low cost for us.

We really like the easy setup of this replication solution, as well as the ease of management. Not to mention, our internal IT Economist determined that the Zerto solution would provide the best ROI out of the competing solutions we analyzed. So far, his calculations have been spot on, and we have saved substantially

Depending on where you create a ticket, it can be lower priority than desired. Use the Zerto portal to create high priority tickets.

Alternatives Considered

Acronis is a great solution and provides a flexible amount of ways to backup and restore data. For software, it competes directly with Carbonite, ShadowProtect, Veeam, and Veritas. Most of these solutions are agent based and require licenses for each. Acronis does a great job for small to medium businesses and matches the features of the other software solutions.

Compared to VMware SRM, Zerto Virtual Replication is much simpler to use and is hypervisor agnostic.

Return on Investment

  • Easy to configure and install as well as setup.
  • Restorations can be very quick if self provided hardware is powerful.
  • Can require switching products if company has large growth as more endpoints require large cost investment.

  • DR testing has been much easier to carry out.
  • Problems with replication/protection are immediately obvious
