Act-On

If you have an existing CRM system, like Microsoft 365, you can integrate campaign automation with Act-On, and then it is worth most of the time it takes to get less-experienced employees on-boarded. In other cases that require more minimal use, the on-boarding may be too lengthy. In that case, it may be better-suited to choose a different SaaS that tracks campaign, ROI, lead scoring, etc.

CheetahMail

Customer service and help desk was a big issue. Smaller businesses will not fit here well. Too long for a response, not enough information on the products, etc... I think CheetahMail might be a good fit for "hands-off" businesses looking for managed platforms but not for boutique mailings. There are much better platforms, for cheaper that can handle nearly any volume smaller business are willing to send.

Pros

  • Customer service. Act-on is the leader in client support for training, basic tips and trouble shooting to planning our Act-On strategy. The Act-On team is flexible, friendly, engaged and collaborative.
  • Act-On does not over-complicate its offering. It is visually appealing and intuitive. Some platforms are just too complicated to keep on top of. We are a small team with a busy marketing schedule. We do not depend a great deal on online lead generation for our growth, however Act-On is still a good fit for us.
  • Trust. No surprises once we had signed our agreement. In fact, our expectations were exceeded.
  • Value - price for service.

  • CheetahMail has grown their platform from just a batch and blast of large quantities of email to one that allows for strategic consumer profiling and targeting. The tool has made strides towards getting to the analytical data so we can do some granular targeting.
  • CheetahMail's strength is and has always been in sending out large quantities of email quickly. They have also enabled actionable consumer profiles for more granular targeting.
  • The platform lends its self to deliver more effective campaigns and measureable results by matching clients’ audience data to display, video, social, mobile and media activating the audience or consumer.

Cons

  • The available reports are quite static, so there is not much you can change. However I do know that this is a function that is more advanced if you go up to the Enterprise version.
  • The alerts to sales people could be developed further, at the moment they are mainly based on demographic's of the visitor but I would like to be able to connect them to lists as well.
  • The calendar provides a good overview of what has been done, but to fully optimize it I would like to be able to add planned activities. This would give the team a better possibility to plan and coordinate.

  • Navigation is not intuitive.
  • Tech support is lacking. An account representative with no technical knowledge is your main contact and there is a long lag when technical issues arise because the account representative has to wait on their tech team. There also often is a communication gap as to what the technical issues are as you are not allowed to talk directly to tech support and the account representative must mediate.
  • Most innovative solutions require much more money and are not included in the basic (self-service) CheetahMail package. For example, integrating with other data sources and having advanced segmentation require you to purchase an outside service that is compatible with CheetahMail but not included in the CheetahMail package. CheetahMail is drastically behind in terms of technology. So much so that we had an experience where we've tried to integrate with certain third parties but were unable to because CheetahMail was not as advanced as the other email providers.
  • Extremely manual process for setup and reporting. There is no automation or anything easily accessible to the marketers without tech support. They are significantly worse than any other competitor.

As I have begun exploring competitors, I've come to realize that every competitor offers so much more functionality and integration than CheetahMail does. When we first signed our contract, CheetahMail was much more innovative and at the forefront of email. Since being bought out by Experian, we've seen a huge decline in service and innovation. They have laid off much of their staff and moved their account representatives to Costa Rica. They also heavily rely on on third parties which you will have to pay large amounts of money for while other Email Service Providers have integrated new technologies into their platform. You will get more for your money going to a different email service such as Responsys, Silverpop, Listrak and the like,

Everything is set up to be used very easily and and it is very intuitive. The menus are set up well and it's easy to find the areas that I need. Emails and landing pages are very easy to create, and they can be created quickly to help save time on campaigns and projects.

CheetahMail has a high learning curve to master and requires a lot of backend work with tech teams to set up. Navigation is not the best and everything that should be automated is still extremely manual.

Account reps have a quick response time but a very slow resolution time. Because account reps do not have technical knowledge, there is a long long lead time between flagging a problem and tech team resolution.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Alternatives Considered

I used Eloqua in my previous role and while it was a great tool I found it very cumbersome and difficult to work with. It's interface was old and it was actually quite a task to get many terms created, designed and aligned as I liked within that tool. Also, the costs for the platform were extremely high. Act-On was a real breath of fresh air for me. Its a much more intuitive interface, and much easier to work with. Although it may not have all of the bells and whistles that some of the bigger players have, it does a lot more than just the basics and gets them right as wel. It also has some cool little innovations of its own as well, the Act-On Anywhere tool is really interesting and valuable, not just to marketers but for sales staff as well. But overall, value for money is much greater with Act-On and that's a key concern for any business

We've evaluated 6 other email service providers and have come to the conclusion that CheetahMail is extremely lacking and consistently on the decline. They lack in innovation, in having the option to integrate data from other sources, in functionality when it comes to automating the email process. If you are going for their self-service option, stay away! I doubt they will still be in business give or take 5 years.

Return on Investment

  • Average web audience grew 300% within three months, with visitors coming from over 100 countries.
  • Greater integration and cooperation between marketing and sales.
  • Enabled us to become much more proactive in lead generation that the company was able to do previously. We can monitor behaviour, react to that appropriately and serve our prospects and customers much more effectively.

  • Faster lead conversion
