Act-On

Act-On is at the moment very much an SME platform, however it it moving in the right direction with its recent overhauls e.g. email and landing page creation, data studio and multiple lead scoring.

Pros

  • Lead nurturing is something that the Act-On software does well. This is important, especially to our business, since the path-to-purchase for our target customer can typically be several weeks or even months. We want to be able to have a partner platform where it is easy to identify interested targets and nurture them along the path to purchase.
  • I like Act-On's new email composer. This is a new feature within the platform and it was definitely a welcomed change. This updated feature really gives us the ability to create professional-looking emails easily without needing to know HTML.
  • Act-On's account team members and support team are always kind and patient, even when you feel like you might be asking the most ridiculous question!

  • Innovation - EPiServer is constantly looking at ways to improve their product and partner with organizations that can develop add-ons to improve the overall features of the core platform. For Example: SilverPop (marketing automation) and Celum (digital asset management).
  • Content Management - It may seem obvious that a WCM product should manage content/reuse well; but, let's be honest, not all products do what they claim to do well. In this case, EPiServer understands the core functionality and has created product that is intuitive and exceeds customer expectations in this area.
  • Previews - EPiServer has built-in templates (emulators) that allow you to easily confirm how your content is going to be displayed on a variety of devices before you publish your content. This is advantageous as it eliminates the guess work and need to redo content (or even code) after you've gone to production because you weren't able to thoroughly test it before hand.

Cons

  • Our experience with Act-On Software has been nothing but positive.
Jim Lovelady profile photo
  • Documentation quality is inconsistent. Ranges from detailed to non-existent, depending on the topic.
  • Publishing between multiple environments requires some nasty workarounds. Export/import tool doesn't work great. Anonymous project preview had to be custom built. Etc.
  • Caching is simple to use with the out of the box set up, but customizing/extending it can be tricky.

Likelihood to Renew

I will certainly recommend the renewal of Act-On for this client because the more the organization uses it the more features are unlocked to us. It's much like eating an elephant - it can't be done all at once. We started with email marketing and SalesForce integration. We got good at scheduling emails, creating the emails and interpreting the data in about 6 months. Then we moved into using the system to create webforms and marketing automation. We have been using those features for over a year. We still have not uncovered the social media tools and many of the other features. Act-On is a tool that grows with the business and I anticipate there is a lot of data being collected that will be invaluable for future decisions on marketing spend and activities - we have yet to uncover the many benefits of Act-On.

The main reason would be because EPiServer is a great product and there aren't many other content management systems that are worth the effort it takes to re-implement an entire website on a new platform. EPiServer also seems to have a more modern approach to the features they offer and the overall design of the workarea so it's very likely that they will continue to improve in the future

Usability

Again, these systems take time to learn, and there's so much under the hood that usability is an issue with any marketing automation software. Act-On provides a nice balance.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Alternatives Considered

I chose Act-On from a listing of about 15-20 systems for automated cloud-based digital marketing. Act-On offered the best email marketing system for me by a wide margin. I needed a versatile, easy to use, and comprehensive system to create attractive marketing communication vehicles, have the capability to incorporate forms, check lists, document/photo inclusions, and other basics so I could create professional advertising to be sent and results tracked. Act-On offered all of this for a very good price in a size package that fit my needs very well. Overall, the compelling attraction was infinite access to helpers without limitation or extra cost.

Ultimately it depends on needs. Price point for Episerver can be similar to Sitecore and is definitely less than Adobe. I think Episerver is strong because the product isn't looking to replace powerful systems (email, etc.) which is why their add-ons are so successful. Sitecore and Adobe are aiming to be full suites and are trying to play in different areas - and sometimes they are spreading themselves too thin so certain parts of their products aren't as good as they could be with a little more TLC.

Return on Investment

  • Faster lead attention due to alerts. Sales people realize their efforts are paying off.
  • Great ability to measure overall behaviors and activity after we've conducted email campaigns. We really like the holistic view.
  • Easy to segment and parse data for reporting and list building. The totality of all of these strengths has tremendously cut down my reporting and analysis of marketing ROI.

  • I don't have access to this kind of data since the projects I work on usually end once the client's site has gone live. I did hear from one of our clients directly that they were able to reach out to more international users with the new EPiServer implementation because they could easily create new contact forms and display translated content.
