Act-On

Actually, I think Act-On is suitable for almost any business as its pricing structure enables you to remain in control and join up at a level that suits your organization. You get most, if not all, of the features you would get from some of the bigger players, like Marketo, HubSpot and Eloqua, without any of the cumbersome hassle of cost that comes with them. For mid-sized enterprises, Act-On is a no brainer but I'd even recommend it to some larger corporates as if they really compare what they're getting with Eloqua/Marketo etc., I think they'd be surprised to see what Act-On has to offer.

Pros

  • Webinar Creation-This is synced up with our Saleforce and WebEx tools for a smooth seamless event from start to finish. Getting our message through but also keeping our CRM up to date with the interaction.
  • Send Over Time- I cannot preach enough about how effective this feature is for getting messaging through. You are able to select specific time blocks that you would like your blast to drip out. This allows them to less likely be marked as spam because they trickle out.
  • Automation-Some of the best drip marketing features I have ever seen! Automation allows for multiple lists and segments with an endless group of messages. One of the best ways to save you and your team time and allow the customers to raise their hands for help.
  • Support-Their support staff is amazing! You never have to talk to someone you cannot understand or that is not personable. They are always ready and eager to help in anyway they can. Their ability to escalate and get answers the same day is very impressive.

  • UI - Pardot has a great UI which is intuitive and very ease to learn and use.
  • Setting up automation rules and completions action are very easy.
  • I like the Pardot wizards that are used in setting up emails and landing pages. Not a bunch different smart campaigns you need to set up.
  • Excellent customer service, They have open office hours a few times a day where customers can call in and get problems solved at no charge.

Cons

  • More training - There are features I haven't used, due to lack of knowing how to use them. The team has offered to train me on these, I just need to take them up on the offer!
  • Email lists - Sometimes if I remove an opt-out from one list, they are still included in another list. This can just be a source of time-consumption as I have to go find where else the contact is in our account.

  • Multi-touch campaign attribution isn't strong

Usability

Act-On has a lot of functionality and we are able to use it for a lot of the things we do in Marketing. Since there are so many features, we are still learning as we go, which I think is a good thing because we are able to keep improving our campaigns.

For anyone that is not technology adverse, this software is pretty inventive and easy to use and implement. You really can't "break" it. You just need to dig in and try a it. Make mistakes and figure out how to fix them. If you get really stuck the chat feature is always available and the team seems to be very helpful and knowledgeable

There have been a couple of service incidents over the past few months. I'm not sure if it has to do with Pardot integrating their infrastructure with ExactTarget. However, they responded well with proactive communication and a debrief as to what happened.

Access to online chat is a very nice feature that I will use when I just want to get a quick question answered. For more difficult issues I have opened tickets and they are resolved in a timely manner by a very knowledgeable staff. The online training videos are also helpful for learning new skills or tools.

The trainers at the Pardot user conference (Elevate and Connections) were very knowledgeable and presented the material well. Again, the content was targeted to more of a new user audience, and was not really relevant for folks who had been using the product for 2+ years.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Pardot's online training touches on all topics briefly and vaguely without much indepth exploration into how a final outcome could look, such as Nurturing Campaigns, Email templates, landing page templates, etc...The only true way to uncover Pardot's full capabilities is to have Front End design and coding experience. Without this key skill set, I would not recommend Pardot to another business.

We were able to implement ourselves in 30 days, which included a migration from Loopfuse. The process was very straightforward and Pardot provides good documentation using Basecamp during the implementation phase. Your Pardot implementation specialist is a resource available during your 60 day implementation phase and you can ask any and all questions.

Alternatives Considered

When compared to others, Act-On Software is:
  • User-friendly
  • Priced right
  • Easy to set-up
  • Simple to integrate
  • Can scale with our business as we need it
  • Flexible terms
  • Great customer service!

We have used Eloqua and Exact Target previously. Pardot is miles ahead of the competition. They are the ones that raise the standard in opposition to clunky and out of touch interfaces and non-intuitive automations. It is a marketers dream to have tools that do not require IT involvement just to do simple or even medium complexity automation. It has saved us so much money just in its automation features alone that Exact Target required APEX to perform the same functionality at additional costs of thousands of dollars. Eloqua was a flop for us. I believe that we contracted with Exact Target as quickly as possible because of the poor performance of Eloqua. Once we discovered Pardot, we actually maintained about 6 months of the remaining Exact Target contract and made the switch to Pardot. This may have cost us monetarily in the short term, but once free to automate and dynamically build lists we will never go to another MAS

Return on Investment

  • Increased Employee Efficiency....let marketing prioritize and make sales reps know which ones to call first, which ones are interested again. I like the sales reps to spend more time on the "Good leads".
  • Better informed - We have a broad product line, being able to see what pages they visited helps the rep prepare for the call.
