Act-On is at the moment very much an SME platform, however it it moving in the right direction with its recent overhauls e.g. email and landing page creation, data studio and multiple lead scoring.

Wishpond

It's a great platform if you're looking for something to run contests that provide leads and drive user engagement, but if they also incorporated social media management and scheduling, Wishpond would be a 10 by far. It's definitely worth looking into specifically for running contests throughout the year, for a wide variety of companies and industries.

Pros

  • Behaviour Analysis. Anachron allows me to monitor all user behaviour on our websites, landing pages, emails webinars and other items. This knowledge, even the anonymous company data around who is on our sites and what they are doing is invaluable.
  • Email marketing and list management. Act-On's list management and email capabilities compare very favourably with some of the higher end automation tools I've used in the past. Although it has its quirks, it stands up strong against its biggest competitors in this regard.
  • Sales Support. The Act-On Anywhere Chrome Extension has rapidly become a must have item for our entire sales team. This recent addition to Act-On gives much greater insight into prospect behaviour to sales and most importantly enables the to get access to that information without having to log into another system, It's included right there in their emails and their web browser. The Act-On tab in Salesforce is also of great interest to our sales team.

  • Wishpond tracks lead very well, so I could see where certain users were coming from, which benefited Marketing to know where to put our budget.
  • Wishpond had an easy-to-use interface, making contest set-up simple for myself and any of my team members who were utilizing it.
  • Wishpond had a great Customer Service team! I could go in and send a message with a concern, knowing I would get a response within an hour or two.

Cons

  • Program automation: the only feature I miss from Eloqua, which I used in a previous role, is the drag and drop canvas for building out a drip campaign. Act-On's functionality works perfectly, but the fact it's all listed in one vertical line makes it slightly more difficult to visualize the flow. Having said that, the tools are all there, it could just do with some extra visualization when it comes to making complex programs.
  • Website prospector. This is one of the features I use very heavily and although the new version recently launched is a big improvement, there's still room for more info. It's by no means bad, but I'd like to see some extra info in here.
  • Forms: Id like to see a more visual formbuilder, in line with the landing page improvements recently made. The form works great but are quite plain visually. This could be improved and remove the need for extra tools in WordPress/other programs.

  • Wishpond charges by lead, so if we went over a certain about of leads attained, we could no longer access more unless we spent more with them.
  • As a separate platform, we had to purchase another social media platform for scheduling along with Wishpond, which squeezed our budget.
  • We would have liked to see more types of contest options and templates to use.

Everything is there, sometimes it just takes a while to realize where it is or just how much the platform can do for you. If you dont use the system everyday it takes a bit of time to remember where you found things. Overall though its pretty easy to figure out

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Alternatives Considered

As a company, it's much more organized, much more in contact with customers, and much more willing and able to pick up their feedback and incorporate it into the product. Pricing wise, it's also much more balanced, with a fairer price mode. It's also more agnostic, in terms of CRM and other integrations. The partner program is also clearer, and IMHO better.

I actually ended up using AgoraPulse AFTER Wishpond because my company was looking for ways to cut down our marketing budget and Agora had the contest capabilities, lead management, along with social media platform scheduling and management. I ended up loving Agora more and not only using it while at Clarion UX/Urban Expositions but bringing it over when I worked at Yale University as well.

Return on Investment

  • As stated in a previous section, one positive impact we have seen so far is the fact that we are more productive and efficient. We are no longer chasing after prospects that are not really interested in purchasing our product.
  • Our marketing team is able to produce nice reports to present at our team meetings every week.
  • The customer support has been so amazing. I needed help with something and had my answer within an hour! I was very impressed by the level of service Act-On provides to their customers.

  • We've obtained tens of thousands of dollars in business using Wishpond, and yet spend only a few thousand dollars to do that. It's been an amazing tool for us as we get some traction with our business.
  • As mentioned before, I did have to spend an entire day, once, creating a report that I needed, as Wishpond didn't offer me the option to export my data in a format I needed. That was really the only negative ROI experience I've had with Wishpond. I still love the product, but I would love to see more flexible exporting options from the tool.
  • After spending days trying to implement other forms on our WordPress website, to no avail, costing me thousands of dollars, I got beautiful Wishpond forms onto my site within hours (and no frustration). Not only does this save me hundreds of dollars each month, I get thousands of dollars of business from these forms. Nice :)
