Actian DataConnect

If your company houses a lot of data locally and needs to free up space, the Actian DataConnect Hybrid Cloud Data Warehouse is an excellent solution for the price. It also allows for complex queries and even some basic data analytics, like Market Basket Analysis. Their free trial period is extremely convenient and you may discover more uses for it than you originally think.

Qlik Replicate

We don't really use a lot of the more advanced features of Qlik Replicate (like transformations) but I feel like Qlik Replicate is very good at the simple 1:1 replication of source to target. It provides you a way to view change tables to see how/when attributes within source tables changed. It's great for business groups that may not know as much about building an ETL but it would get the data they need into a non-production environment to query/investigate/report on certain aspects of their business without the necessity of a giant IT budget.

Pros

Actian DataConnect

  • The large connector base for DataConnect is outstanding. However even when they do not have a custom connector, they have a web services Invoker which allows you to connect to any web services.
  • The underlying scripting language is Visual Basic-ish. Very easy to start.
  • The product has been around a long time, through multiple company acquistions, and still is a competitive player via pricing.
  • Support team is awesome.
  • Large user community.

Qlik Replicate

  • Qlik Replicate brought a great experience with respect to the ease of implementation and great UI. We had a software that was a blackbox for the team and was very hard to maintain. Qlik Replicate implementation helped us avoid dependency on one resource.
  • Global transformation and in-built functions are what I like in our project.
  • You can customize the conversion/transformation using a JSON file generated by Qlik Replicate, and it is very convenient.

Cons

Actian DataConnect

  • Sometimes the screen does not load- since it is a web based software, this can be seen as a reliability issue.
  • "Maps" can become somewhat complex, and between multiple developers this can be painful when sharing or explaining others' work.
  • The concept of macros adds flexibility in how to solve problems, but is a separate language and can take time to learn and master.

Qlik Replicate

  • Their support is pretty poor. They can take a every long time to get to the root cause of issues and it can take a long time to roll out patches for bugs.
  • We asked about a pubsub target endpoint over a year ago and have not seen anything in their roadmap for it
  • QEM APIs could be improved. We've tried to automate a lot of the management but due to these limitations our solution is not as good as it could be
  • No ci/cd process promoting tasks across environments.

Certain aspects of Qlik Replicate are very easy to setup, for example a Source and Target systems. The most basic replication tasks are pretty easy to realize, but more complex setups can be more difficult and finnicky.Troubleshooting issues can be very difficult. Errors are not always clear in nature or clearly presented. It is clear enough when Qlik Replicate cannot connect to a source or target system. It is significantly less clear when a working replication task fails for reasons not related to connectivity. The logging is minimal by default which is fine when everything is working but insufficient when issues arise. You can ratchet up the level of logging for various aspects of a given replication task, but it isn't always clear for which aspect you should do this. Ratchet up the wrong aspect and you will only have more noise through which to sort; ratchet up too many at once and then it creates far too much logging of which to make any sense.

Actian DataConnect is a great product for data storage, processing, and complex querying. It also has the added benefits of basic data analytics and data mining. We were surprised at how easy it was to perform Market Basket Analysis. I would highly recommend this system to a large business and encourage you to start a free trial period.

The issue I've had is that Qlik does an awful job of keeping their customers informed when new versions of the software are available. We found that we were using a version that was no longer supported and could never get help. When it came time to get us upgraded so that we were on a current version, no one knew how to help get us to where we needed to be. We had to purchased professional services time and even then I was basically on my own to get everything built out and set up. Qlik needs to be more proactive with communicating about new releases and how to get your version upgraded in the most secure, safe way possible.

A lot of the process was done by an Attunity or Qlik engineer and there wasn't a lot of knowledge transfer to feel comfortable about maintaining the software without their help.

Alternatives Considered

Actian DataConnect

As I stated earlier, DataConnect makes a head-to-head run against the others. It has advantages and disadvantages compared to the competitors. The choice really comes down to pricing and specific requirement needs for the project you are planning. Questions such as On-premise or Cloud, Security, and Specific Connectors available will drive your decision.

Attunity: Easy interface, relatively easy monitoring, zos support, budget friendly.we choose Attunity. At the same time we use AWS DMS for DB2, sqlserver -> aws services replications (cheaper). However because AWS DMS does not support db2 zos we use Attunity for db2 zos mainframe replication.

Return on Investment

Actian DataConnect

  • This tool was chosen prior to my arrival and was used to build three integrations. We have decided to switch to SSIS since we have licenses for it and it is a more common tool for ETL integrations.
  • It has been difficult to network with individuals that have experience with this tool.
  • Having been a part of a software package purchased, we have chosen to use a different tool for future integrations and plan to rewrite existing integrations.
Justin Duperre | TrustRadius Reviewer

Qlik Replicate

  • We are replicating data from DB2 and Oracle. Data delivery speed is impressive.
  • Our old replication software was complex and was maintained by one resource. By introducing Qlik Replicate, we have the flexibility where many resources are trained and capable to operate and there is no need for a dedicated resource to manage this tool. This helped us save time and money by reducing a dedicated resource.
