Actian DataConnect

The choice to use Actian DataConnect really comes down to pricing and the type of integration project you are performing, specifically with the requirements, whether you want the integration to be on-premise or in the cloud, can you install agents on your servers etc. For integration tools it runs head to head with its competitors.

SAP Replication Server

I asked questions about a warm standby and multicast replication. We ended up using bi-directional replication and a warm standby db. Having 3 or more live OLTP DB's where each was read-write was going to be difficult to manage for contention if the same table was being updated. We stuck with an easier solution to have only two OLTP's, and then used additional DB's as read-only DW's.

Pros

  • The large connector base for DataConnect is outstanding. However even when they do not have a custom connector, they have a web services Invoker which allows you to connect to any web services.
  • The underlying scripting language is Visual Basic-ish. Very easy to start.
  • The product has been around a long time, through multiple company acquistions, and still is a competitive player via pricing.
  • Support team is awesome.
  • Large user community.

  • Training was excellent on the product.
  • Great customer service when questions arose.
  • Functionality was awesome.
  • Bringing the main OLTP down for maintenance then allowed down time we could previously never afford to make SLA committments

Cons

  • Integration Manager needs better scheduling improvements. Like dependencies, and not running a process again if the prior run is still running.
  • New connector development does not seem a priority.

  • A few bugs existed in the specific implementation we created requirements for, and we had to wait for Sybase to fix those bugs before it went live to production
  • Two way replication had issues where if the same table was being updated by both source and destination, a decision had to made on the "truth". We had to write some special software for specific business requirements.
  • Sometimes RepServer would go down, and we didn't know about it until the next time a healthcheck was performed. We had to write some monitoring software to notify us if things went down.

Alternatives Considered

As I stated earlier, DataConnect makes a head-to-head run against the others. It has advantages and disadvantages compared to the competitors. The choice really comes down to pricing and specific requirement needs for the project you are planning. Questions such as On-premise or Cloud, Security, and Specific Connectors available will drive your decision.

Hands down Sybase has the best replication

  • Problems are fairly easy to handle and rework.

  • With SAP Replication server, connecting to Big Data is easiest and fastest way to achieve the data transfer and receive requirement with the help of Big data integration such as HIVE connectors, to and from different stage files,
  • One of the great functionalities of SAP RS is, it can maintain business continuity by providing the DR solution without downtime, and it only requires medium expertise to utilise the SAP RS functionality to run. This means that every organisation can get real benefit out of it.
  • SAP has upgrades available that offer effectively optimised performance sizing tools to meet your requirements.
