Actian Matrix

Actian matrix is not good for small data sets. If you have a limited data pool, or do not plan on having multiple users/clients accessing a data source, stick with a more traditional relational database model - Access for the truly small user base, or a DB2 or Oracle back end if your going to have multiple users, and moderate sized data. Actian is for LARGE data sets (Big Data, in the industry parlance). Millions of rows of data from multiple sources with various down stream systems accessing the database. It is for data analytics of large data groups and intense data mining.

Oracle Data Warehouse

Including other products, Oracle is very specialized in business support. Choosing Oracle Data Warehouse would be a safe choice for an enterprise-level company (more than a thousand employees). Healthcare organizations may want to consider Oracle, as they are typically conservative with privacy and security issues with patient data. Although cloud-based systems are widely being adopted in the healthcare industry (such as population research or genomics), core data sets (such as patients' sensitive medical records) may be better stored with a home-grown data center and warehouse solution.

Pros

  • Super fast. Aggregate query such as SUM(), Count() returns result within seconds from a table with more than billion records.
  • Excellent data compression.
  • Easy maintenance. We managed this database without having a full time DBA.
  • Support ANSI SQL and ODBC/JDBC. It's easy to connect to this database from other systems.

  • Oracle Data Warehouse is a well-known and already validated product. Its performance, technical support, documentation, online community, and sustainability is the best among the area.
  • It is easy to find and hire good data developers, data architects, and analysts who specialize in Oracle Data Warehouse.
  • It is easy to develop a financial plan based on the product, as its licensing is systematic. Also, the product's scalability is well developed with licensing policy and it makes it easier to flexibly plan budgets as we need more functionalities and services.

Cons

  • Dashboard for Admin instead of a linux console.
  • Admin with ability to kill inactive sessions when sessions reaches to more than allowed sessions. We ended up restarting the database.
  • Ability to easily scale up database by adding extra node.
  • Better support from Actian.

  • For the query rewrite related to the materialized views the optimizer at times goes against the base tables. There is room for improvement for the optimizer to make more intelligent choices. There does exist functionality to identify the reason why the optimizer failed to do the rewrite of the original query. This can be further expanded.
  • On the storage indexes currently there is limitation of only 8 columns. In addition Oracle decides which of the columns are chosen as part of the storage index. It would be nice to see if both of these are addressed in future versions/releases.
  • Some of the features are 'Options' which would increase the overall licensing cost and is an important factor for certain class of users/clients. It would be nice to see if at least some of the options are standard functionality.

I wish to give higher rating for the speed and efficiency in handling the queries, but only 6 because of consistent bugs we encounter

Alternatives Considered

Actian Matrix is our first big data analytics storage platform, and as I was not involved in the POC process to compare it to other products out on the market, unfortunately I cannot say if it is better than other Big Data storage options. I can say that it out performs products such as Oracle or UDB in regards to the volume of data it can easily index and handle.

Hadoop still being a naive field, we have very few expertise with great knowledge in Hadoop. Oracle Data Warehouse does not support unstructured data, where as Hadoop does. There are a lot of functionalities which Oracle Data Warehouse provides, which makes us us not to go for Hadoop and many other tools, unless it is highly necessary. Hadoop is way difficult to learn compared to Oracle's easy User Interface.

Return on Investment

  • I cannot comment on the specific numbers, all I can say is that switching to the backend greatly improved our processing speed. The more we process through our systems, the more clients we can serve. Which should bump ROI.

  • Faster execution of queries, making analytics available quicker.
  • Easy integration with other tools on top of Oracle DWH saves time and effort for tech teams.
  • Increases licensing costs for a business significantly.
