Actian Matrix

Actian matrix is not good for small data sets. If you have a limited data pool, or do not plan on having multiple users/clients accessing a data source, stick with a more traditional relational database model - Access for the truly small user base, or a DB2 or Oracle back end if your going to have multiple users, and moderate sized data. Actian is for LARGE data sets (Big Data, in the industry parlance). Millions of rows of data from multiple sources with various down stream systems accessing the database. It is for data analytics of large data groups and intense data mining.

Power BI For Office 365

If you want to create a visual dashboard or report that utilises various data sources then PowerBI can do this. It is great in that it takes your on-premises data and stores it on Microsoft servers where it can interact with it faster, reducing load on your own servers, while being efficient in what it transfers out.We have found it not well suited if you wanted to publish a simple report to many staff as they may all need a Pro license which can get expensive. Even if embedding the report onto a shared platform like SharePoint, it will not display if the users doesn't have a PowerBI Pro license.

Pros

  • Super fast. Aggregate query such as SUM(), Count() returns result within seconds from a table with more than billion records.
  • Excellent data compression.
  • Easy maintenance. We managed this database without having a full time DBA.
  • Support ANSI SQL and ODBC/JDBC. It's easy to connect to this database from other systems.

  • Easy to make visual dashboards from SQL queries. Previously we had to use a third party application that had to run on a web server that was so complex to setup and run. PowerBI removes all that.
  • Ability to control who/which group has access to each dashboard or report. Ties in well with the rest of the Office 365 ecosystem.
  • Has many connectors to allow pulling data from various systems, both onsite (via gateway) or external (via APIs), and join the data to create a report/dashboard.
  • Ability to show data but also export the data, if permitted.
  • Easy to show PowerBI dashboards on SharePoint or on other websites via embedded code.

Cons

  • Its a new product, there are plenty of bugs to work out with regards to converting special reserve characters that might crop up in data.
  • The Matrix 2 Matrix database port tool needs some ironing out.

  • Once a report uses a Pro feature, it needs a Pro license, but a lot of these are just basic features and the users are just viewing and not using any of the advanced features. It would be nice to have a Pro / Viewing license and Pro / Interacting license.
  • Limited amount of refreshes per 24 hours period. 5 refreshes as of Dec 2018.
  • The emailing of reports is there but kind of basic. It will do a screen grab of a report, which doesn't turn out very well.

If I were a small business owner, I would likely use Power BI for Office 365 for the sheer fact that I would get the Office licensing I need, along with powerful capabilities. As a Microsoft Partner, we continue to see Microsoft invest heavily in the Power BI capabilities, and will continue to implement and support BI solutions around this product, as we believe this is in the best interest of our clients.

I wish to give higher rating for the speed and efficiency in handling the queries, but only 6 because of consistent bugs we encounter

At the maximum, we have had 10 users, of which 3 were data analysts. The others were consumers of the data.

Alternatives Considered

Actian Matrix is our first big data analytics storage platform, and as I was not involved in the POC process to compare it to other products out on the market, unfortunately I cannot say if it is better than other Big Data storage options. I can say that it out performs products such as Oracle or UDB in regards to the volume of data it can easily index and handle.

Oracle was nice, super expensive to implement if it's not in use already. JobDiva is choppy and heavy on the system while does not give great reports. Salesforce is good; remote access is good however their support is terrible

Using Microsoft's Office 365 framework means it uses existing users, groups, and built-in security to help share and control access. This can include MFA too which is great. If working within the web version of PowerBI, you can more easily collaborate than when working on the desktop application, as you can only have 1 person working on the file at a time.

I need R data, Excel and SQL server, which it has. It would be good if I could import a web table though.

Return on Investment

  • I cannot comment on the specific numbers, all I can say is that switching to the backend greatly improved our processing speed. The more we process through our systems, the more clients we can serve. Which should bump ROI.

  • It's allowed us to better visualize large amounts of data.
  • It's an easy way to tie into an existing SQL database for users that don't know SQL.
