Actian Matrix

Actian matrix is not good for small data sets. If you have a limited data pool, or do not plan on having multiple users/clients accessing a data source, stick with a more traditional relational database model - Access for the truly small user base, or a DB2 or Oracle back end if your going to have multiple users, and moderate sized data. Actian is for LARGE data sets (Big Data, in the industry parlance). Millions of rows of data from multiple sources with various down stream systems accessing the database. It is for data analytics of large data groups and intense data mining.

Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2850

It is highly applicable for large, corporate companies with data coming from multiple sources. Teradata can be used as an ODS (Operational Data Store) to merge the source data, then it can also be used to create development/UAT databases, and production databases under the same server. It is capable of processing billions of records per day. It is less appropriate for companies with a single source of data.

Pros

Actian Matrix

  • Super fast. Aggregate query such as SUM(), Count() returns result within seconds from a table with more than billion records.
  • Excellent data compression.
  • Easy maintenance. We managed this database without having a full time DBA.
  • Support ANSI SQL and ODBC/JDBC. It's easy to connect to this database from other systems.

Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2850

  • Can query multiple databases within one server and view all results in one window. Helps speed up analysis.
  • Teradata uses AMPs (Access Module Processors) to increase speed of data processing/queries. You must use 'COLLECT STATISTICS' properly to efficiently use the AMPs.
  • Most standard SQL practices work on Teradata. Also, Teradata formats the query in a nice colored structure.
  • Can search for tablenames or specific columnnames across the entire server. Helps when changing a specific column or table structure.

Cons

Actian Matrix

  • Some of the bugs were annoying and QA definitely needs improvement
  • Connectivity to Informatica and ETL providers
  • Workload management could be better like when you compare with Teradata

Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2850

  • Errors on compiling a procedure are sometimes hard to decipher. Teradata provides a line number of the error but this number does not always match the line number of the procedure in the query window.
  • Teradata won't run a query if I copy and paste from my internal company chat. Something with the formatting from the chat creates a syntax error, so I have to take time to rewrite the query.
  • I haven't been able to insert multiple new rows into a table with 1 insert. Other SQL programs allow this with a comma, but Teradata makes you create separate inserts for each row.

I wish to give higher rating for the speed and efficiency in handling the queries, but only 6 because of consistent bugs we encounter

Alternatives Considered

Actian Matrix

Actian Matrix is our first big data analytics storage platform, and as I was not involved in the POC process to compare it to other products out on the market, unfortunately I cannot say if it is better than other Big Data storage options. I can say that it out performs products such as Oracle or UDB in regards to the volume of data it can easily index and handle.
