This appliance is well suited for organizations that have a need to monitor, moderate, or log social networking site use or the use of any website. It is a very solid tool for any information security department to have at their disposal.

We probably don't use as many of the features available to us, because again I am just one person. But we've got a great resource in our Account Director at Shoutlet, who is always available to provide examples of great campaigns that other clients have done, and answer some questions about how to make better use of the product!

Pros

  • Filtering capabilities for both URL and Social Media were easy to implement and manage by the security team. These features allow you to grant or deny access to various user groups as needed all the way to an individual grant or deny. It offers a vary large robust list of configuration options.
  • If you have a need for storing and later discovering Instant Messaging conversations or even messaging in social media then this is the tool to deploy. At that time when we chose this product, none of the other products were capable of meeting the feature set that Actiance offered.
  • Ease of deployment. Its abilities for integration with LDAP and Active directory give a wide set of deployment options.

  • Scheduling posts to Facebook/Twitter is a breeze, and makes our social marketing calendar much easier to manage.
  • Contest implementation is one of our favorite things about Shoutlet. We're able to collect much more meaningful information about our fan base and provide more engaging sweepstakes for them!

Cons

  • Its configuration options were very large and required a good deal of time to learn all of the various settings.

  • Many times upgrades caused bugs that stopped our teams from being able to respond to comments or view what was coming through as feedback.
  • At the height of our peak season I found it difficult to delegate work to multiple agents in the same account due to the way feeds are run and the max results per page and the system duplicating results because multiple accounts are being pulled into one feed.
  • Being able to pull all comments or 'tweets' made by one user for Twitter accounts mirroring Facebook functionality.

Its not often that you come across a platform that is as easy to deploy as this one was. Once deployed it is an easy configure and forget appliance, but then you wouldn't get to benefit from its many other available features.

In general, the software works really well. I get weird errors for time to time. Tech Therapy does a great job helping when things go awry

I feel that the level of support I get from Shoutlet is far beyond the level of support I've received from other companies in a variety of services. It would be nice to have a regular update from Tech Therapy that lists out any potential bugs they're working to fix for the various browsers they support. Sometimes I wonder if I'm experiencing an issue simply because I use Firefox vs. Chrome.

Alternatives Considered

This was the only appliance of its kind that I have used. Other devices have different capabilities for web filtering such as the checkpoint firewalls, but none of them offered the overall solution that was deployed with this product at that time.

Prior to Shoutlet, we used Hootsuite Pro, and we still actually use it on occasion. Hootsuite has a great product but we found that Shoutlet offered a more robust, valuable product that helped us meet our needs better. We also explored Offerpop, but again, we found that Shoutlet had more to offer for the price. Other similar products like Radian6 were simply out of our price range. I mentioned that we're such a small team and just not ready to dive in with a full enterprise solution yet

  • Faster investigative work has led to increased employee efficiency when working on security investigations.

  • Increased efficiency – With such a small social media team, efficiency is key. Shoutlet has helped us manage not only the content for all of our presences, but also engage with our customers on all platforms.
  • Customer service – Though our customer service department is not actively using Shoutlet, the platform has helped us recognize and address issues that can easily be directed to customer service.
  • Engagement – Our engagement rate on all our social platforms has increased since using Shoutlet. I think it's because we're able to see all the conversations taking place and easily jump in to engage with our end-users. Additionally, we're now able to run contests and promotions which help boost engagement levels as well.
