ActionGrid works well for recruiter sourcing of very specific candidates. It is not the most effective tool for sourcing of a more complex type of profile. It does not allow for booleans and becomes slower when looking at large candidate pools.

I don't know if this is exactly what you are asking but the challenge I have had at ASU is overcoming the perception that Planview is only good for managing IT projects. Project management is project management whether it is an IT project or managing capital projects.

Pros

  • Saving candidate information
  • Creating packet templates
  • Matching candidates to potential jobs

  • Portfolios-Planview is the only company I have come across which has this feature. I can't say enough positive things about portfolios. We are so reliant on portfolios because we can quickly view our projects in countless ways.
  • Column sets-we have hundreds of custom fields, most of which we have set up as column sets. This in conjunction with portfolios allows us to filter even further how we are looking at outr project information.
  • The search feature-this is one of the easiest ways to search for projects.
  • Custom fields-Last I knew I think we had the largest customization of Planview. We created hundreds of custom fields which allowed us to consolidate the date from numerous Access databases and Excel spreadsheets. One thing most people don't realize is that this type of customization doesn't break when there is an upgrade. Other systems don't allow for much customization for that reason.
  • By Planview allowing for so many custom fields we are able to have only one system to track all of the related project data-most other systems wouldn't allow that which means I would have to have another method to track all the data which doesn't fit into "their" definition of what is important to a project.

Cons

  • It could be more accurate
  • Better views would be nice. cleaner
  • Wish the refreshing was quicker

  • Reporting - Out of the box reporting is very limited. To get high quality reports requires significant data mart work/customization. The availability of internal Business Intelligence resources will help mitigate this issue significantly.
  • Technical Documentation - Planview seems to push customers away from building out their own infrastructure and installing the software/upgrades. This is because the preferred method appears to be Planview hosted, or Planview built/installed onsite. In light of this, the technical documentation is not comprehensive enough to make the self install option very efficient.

We have been a Planview customer since 1999 and have seen it grow and mature as a tool. We have looked at other tools and have found that PV continues to meet our needs and is easy for our resources to use. They work to stay up on the project management industry and the direction it is going, keep on on current technology so that we can work more effectively, provide excellent customer support and have great pricing for what they offer. We can purchase only the modules we need versus buying a tool where we would only use a portion of the functionality.

The previous version didn't have as many rich features available on the web (right clicks, sub-menus, etc.) that would have sped up productivity on many screens.

We are long time Planview users and its availability is only limited to our internal SLAs for nightly backups. I have never experienced any unexpected or prolonged software downtime from Planview itself.

Always have a pre-implementation meeting or conference call with Planview to ensure all are on the same page, disclosure of all and any customization (including reports) and plan for support after implementation of a specified amount of time with the assigned implementation resource. And document everything

Alternatives Considered

It's excellent. It really helps optimize a search.

We made a thorough comparison in between a handful of products on several aspects including functional requirements, non-functional requirements, user friendliness, financial aspects etc. Planview came out strongest on almost all aspects. When taking into account the evaluations done by Gartner and Forrester, our findings got confirmed.

Return on Investment

  • It has allowed me to stay more organized
  • It has yielded great search results
  • I like the search capabilities
Natalie Fiore profile photo
  • Quicker impact and IT data analysis do you a central repository. Faster then sending out inventory lists for managers to fill in about IT systems.
  • Better insight into under-used systems or licenses, ideal candidates for cost reduction
  • Hard to indicate ROI, it speeds up different use cases which are not known upfront.
