ActiveBatch Workload Automation

Any place one can find a task that is performed repeatedly - either on a schedule, or in response to a triggering state (i.e. a file being created in a specific folder) - that task is at least a good candidate for ActiveBatch [Workload] Automation to be used. Repeating FTP jobs, regular SQL tasks or maintenance, regular file system maintenance - all can likely be taken out of the hands of employees, freeing up time for less repetitive tasks.ActiveBatch [Workload Automation] is not appropriate for any task which requires flexible judgment - it isn't an AI engine. ActiveBatch [Workload Automation] also requires at least two servers - a manager ("Scheduler") and at least one worker ("Agent") - thus it is not a good choice for a very small company without those resources available. It is also somewhat costly - not in terms of value, but possibly beyond the reasonable budget of a small company or non-profit with thin profit margins where the investment may outweigh the return.

Heroku Platform

Heroku is very well suited for startups looking to get a server stack up and running quickly. There is little to no overhead when managing your instances. However, you'll need a background in basic DevOps or system management to make sure everything is set up correctly. In addition, it's easy to accidentally go crazy on pricing. Make sure you're only creating the server instances you need to run the base application and set up an auto-scaler plugin to handle peaks.

Pros

ActiveBatch Workload Automation

  • ActiveBatch [Workload Automation] is great for simplifying complex tasks so that users of multiple technical skill levels can create and monitor automated tasks.
  • The support team is amazing and will respond with solutions and answers to questions or issues very quickly.
  • ActiveBatch [Workload Automation] does a great job of adding new features and enhancements to the product based on customer feedback.

Heroku Platform

  • Heroku has a very simple deployment model, making it easy to get your application up-and-running with minimal effort. We can focus on our efforts the unique aspects of our application.
  • The robust add-on marketplace makes it easy to try out new approaches with minimal effort and investment -- and when we settle on a solution, we can easily scale it.
  • Heroku's support is quite good -- their staff is quite technical and willing to get into the weeds to diagnose even complicated problems.

Cons

ActiveBatch Workload Automation

  • While I like being able to reuse scheduling objects and the like, more work needs to be done to help one not reinvent the same scheduling object without realizing it and to then find scheduling objects that have similar schedules even if they are worded slightly differently than what I'm expecting. It needs to be "smarter". It was easy to accumulate a pool of scheduling objects that while named differently, had exactly the same schedule. It was also hard to sift through to find the little differences between similarly named scheduling objects.
  • The logger had a clean enough interface but it could be more legible and offer contextual help to describe the messages one is reading. I remember trying to read black text on a medium gray background with Courier size 10-11 font. Not so easy to read quickly and to parse through the relevant parts. I think some selective color coding would be good and links to message definitions or any form of further information would be nice. Maybe the ability to export the log file to various formats would also be helpful.
  • I don't remember a dashboard that at a glance on the top level would highlight what jobs failed completely and which jobs might have warnings or non-critical errors. I got emails because I defined to get them. Maybe again if there was a way to color-code the type of error would be good nice-to-have.

Heroku Platform

  • Large price jumps between certain resource tiers (2x Dyno for $50 per month versus Performance Dyno for $250). Free Postgres next jumps to $50 per month.
  • Marketing/Branding to non-technical stakeholders. As the years pass, I've had to fight more to convince stakeholders on the value of Heroku over AWS.
  • Improve Buildpack documentation. This is one area where Heroku's documentation is fairly confusing.

Heroku is easy to use, services a ton of functions for you out of the box, and provides a means to get a software product off the ground and managed quickly and easily. The tools provide allows a small to medium size org to move very quickly. The CLI tools provided make managing an entire technical infrastructure simple.

ActiveBatch's usability is where it shines. It is pretty straight-forward to learn and administer. Our engineers like it because you can use a GUI to manage it or leverage the command line & api's. You can also create templates or clone existing "jobs" so you don't have to recreate the wheel. It is easy to chain jobs together to make them run in a specific sequence as well.

Easy to use web based console and easy to use command line tools; deployment is done directly from a GIT repository. What more could you ask for?The one thing that keeps me from giving it a 10 is that custom build packs are almost incomprehensible. We used one for a while because we needed cairo graphics processing. Fortunately, I was able to figure out a different way to do what we needed so that we could get off the custom build pack.

Heroku availability correlates pretty strongly to AWS US EAST availability. We had a couple of times where there was a Heroku-specific issue but not for the last 7-8 months.

The only issue that I ever have is that about 1 out of 20 deployments (git push) will hang and need to be cancelled and done again.

We have been pretty happy with ActiveBatch support so far. Luckily, we have not had any major issues with it - so we haven't logged a lot of support tickets. The response time to tickets is about average and the level of expertise of the support engineers seems about average as well. Our sales team has been helpful in getting faster responses when necessary as well.

I've used it for many years without facing any major problem. It's not hard at all to get used to it, it's documentation is outstanding and simple. We are close to 2020 and I don't think most of the existing companies or startups should still face old problems such as wasting time deploying code and calculate computing resources.

Be ready to pay a bit more than expected in the beginning if you're migrating from a big server. The application is probably not ready for the change and you have to keep improving it with time.
It's also important to consider that you can't save anything to the disc as it will be lost when your application restarts, so you have to think about using something like S3.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveBatch Workload Automation

During initial selection, we compared ActiveBatch with simple schedulers like Task Manager and cron, as well as VisualCron and JAMS. ActiveBatch had the widest range of triggers and the best scheduler/calendar system, and the most comprehensive list of easily-available actions. We also were invited to use ASCI's normal tech support during a trial period - and having done a fair bit of tech support myself, I was very impressed! It was quick and easy to talk to an actual tech (minimal voice menu), and my questions were answered quickly and accurately, with a friendly tech who didn't sound as if I were an interruption to their game of solitaire (like I've gotten from plenty of other vendors). No other vendor we looked at invited us to evaluate their tech support so directly.

Heroku Platform

Heroku is the more expensive option for hosting compared to some of the cloud platforms we investigated, but it's worth it for us because of the plug-and-play nature of Heroku deployment. We can be up and running in a few minutes and know with precision how much it will cost us each month to run the application, unlike Amazon Web Services where you have to go to great pains to configure it correctly or else you might end up with a shocking monthly bill. Overall, spending the time to configure Amazon Web Services or one of its competitors is likely the more affordable and powerful choice, because you have control over so many specifics of the configuration. But it also requires the burden of continuing to maintain and update your AWS instance, whereas with Heroku they take care of security fixes and platform upgrades. It's a great service and we are happy to pay the extra cost for the value-adds Heroku provides.

Return on Investment

ActiveBatch Workload Automation

  • Saves employees time and sanity, from having to manually run tasks at certain times.
  • Cost is not overly expensive, considering the amount of platforms it integrates with "out of the box."
  • Takes control of sensitive processes, and runs them confidentially. Alerts management when completed.

Heroku Platform

  • Heroku allowed us to get up and running fast. Deployment was really easy and connecting to our codebase was, too. The deployment integration with GitHub is pretty slick.
  • The add-ons provisioning is so simple and the documentation is so thorough that, at least at first, it means you don't have to hire a dedicated devops person to manage this stuff.
  • Heroku has tools that allow the collaborators (those with access to the Heroku dashboard) to be able to quickly and easily do triage from just about anywhere, including your smartphone.
