Pros

ActiveCampaign

  • Automations - We constantly use automations to do all kinds of things behind the scenes. Like move contact through the deals based upon actions they have taken, urls they have visited or emails they have opened.
  • Predictive Sending - We use predictive sending to enhance our open rates. We've seen a 20% increase in opens as a result.
  • Conversations - we use conversations instead of chatbot on our sites. While this feature is still in its early stages, we have made the switch now. My staff has the app downloaded to their phones and can interact as need. Not as robust as Intercom and some others, but it is a great personalization tool.
  • Deals/Tasks - We use the Deals and Tasks for all kinds of things. I can communicate with my VA using tasks related to clients in a way that keeps everything under the same hood.
  • Scoring - We use scoring to run "behind the scenes" context. We monitor the contacts actions, apply a score and send them rewards or reminders whichever is appropriate. This is a huge hit with our clients.

Cons

ActiveCampaign

  • Text message marketing. There are other tools that are specifically designed for text message marketing, but it would be great if ActiveCampaign took over this industry as well, with their same philosophy of simple and fast to build + super powerful.
  • It gets a bit expensive when you have a large list, because they charge in tiers based on the number of contacts. So does everyone else though, so if you have a big list it will be expensive to host.

  • There are a number of exciting looking features in beta that will greatly increase functionality: opportunity finder, experience builder, and audience insights. I'm just anxious to get them.

Our use case is primarily product-focused. We've adapted the functionality to work for our needs, but we don't use it as much for its intended marketing functions. Once we evolve our product to a more traditional LMS, we won't need ActiveCampaign anymore.

It's super easy and fast to set up automations and email lists. In under five minutes, you can be mailing your list. I'm not a fan of complexity, and I'm also not a fan of being hamstrung by weak tools, so I really like using ActiveCampaign. It's the perfect blend of simplicity and power.

Reliability and Availability

I've never had ActiveCampaign down for maintenance. I'm sure they update things, but they always seem to manage to stay live. Also, I've had very few errors, if any. None come to mind. This might be to due to the fact I focus on building things as simply as possible, but I also believe it's due to the quality of the software.

ActiveCampaign works seamlessly with the other tools I use. It integrates directly with most. And if no direct integration is available, there is almost always one you can make using Zapier. I've yet to run into a technical error that prevented me from doing something I wanted to be able to do.

Support

I have only had to reach out to ActiveCampaign support a couple of times, and every time they have helped me out quickly and efficiently. They get back to you pretty quickly and usually have the solution figured out within just a couple of message exchanges. Please keep in mind I use the simple features of ActiveCampaign, so if there's a complication solution you're looking for help with, your experience with support might be a little different.

Implementation

ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign 10.0

If your email marketing strategy is clunky and confusing then it doesn't matter what tool you use or need to set up. It will take time to set it up. However, if you favor simple and effective email marketing strategies then you'll find that setting up ActiveCampaign is a breeze. And the results you'll get with it will far outweigh the time it takes to set it up.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign strikes the right balance of simplicity versus power. Unlike heavyweights such as AWeber, ActiveCampaign is a breeze to use. However, at the other side of the spectrum other easy to use tools like MailChimp are severely lacking in their ability to integrate automations with your website's business logic. Based on hitting the sweet spot, I can clearly recommend ActiveCampaign over it's competitors to most website businesses.

Bluecore

Bluecore impressed us from the start because of their focus on the email. I got the sense from SmarterHQ that they viewed themselves more as a segmentation tool. While also very useful, Bluecore made it easier to close the circle and take that segmented list all the way through creative process to the actual send, with a consciousness of how we secure the conversion. Since becoming a customer, Bluecore has continued to blow me away with their innovation and professionalism, leaving no doubt that we made the right choice.

Scalability

I've tried several of the email services available today. ActiveCampaign makes it easy and fast to get set up. And they have some of the best email deliverability available today as well. That's really important when it comes to email marketing, because winding up in spam or promotion folders makes your email marketing efforts and uphill battle.

Return on Investment

ActiveCampaign

  • The fortune is in the follow through, and ActiveCampaign makes the follow through easier. Drip campaigns and triggers strengthen granular follow up opportunities.
  • The granular messaging options coupled with attractive pricing have made this our go to service for businesses who need more automation features, but are just getting started in the space.

  • Bluecore emails have higher open, click, and conversion rates than our static campaigns. Unsubscribe rates are also lower because we're providing customers with information that they want to receive.
