ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

BlueHornet is a great platform for a small or medium size business that is graduating from the "free" platforms and wants more features. It delivers a generally easy to use interface and HTML editor. The concept of segments as implemented by Blue Hornet is not standard, but it allows fairly powerful segmentation capabilities that are easy for a marketer to use. Why choose a more complicated, expensive platform if you do not need or use their advanced features? Whistles and bells are attractive, but a potential user should be realistic about their immediate needs and the needs they will have over the next year. BlueHornet has seen some history of instability. If you need to send mission-critical transactional messages like password resets, it may not be the best choice, but for a budget-conscious email marketer, it is a reasonable option.

Pros

  • Automations (based on tagging a user from your codebase via their API, start sending that user an email sequence)
  • Campaign Builder (as good as other tools such as Mailchimp)
  • Pricing (pay per contact, not per email sent. AND email addresses can be added to multiple lists and only count as 1 contact, unlike Mailchimp which would consider that 2 contacts)

  • It is very good support for all social media management, engagement, and posting. There are features that most other platforms do not offer (reposting and calendar views to name a few).

Cons

  • You can't add a contact without an email address.
  • Site tracking of visitors sometimes doesn't work, so when they submit a form their activity prior to form submission is lost.
  • Sales/CRM reporting is very limited. Anyone coming from a proper CRM like Salesforce would find reporting unusable, especially sales teams.
  • Email builder needs some work, it has certain limitations and doesn't allow custom designs to be editable in the builder.
  • No Android app for CRM (suppose to be in the works as we were told).

  • I am a big fan of Argyle. The only thing I would suggest is to add integration with LinkedIn Groups.

Alternatives Considered

It's easy to set up and accurate deliverability makes it one of my best choices for crucial product promotions. It also helps me with various integrations to reduce my time in creating a campaign.

As an email marketer for 12 years, I have significant experience using numerous ESPs. If you need true enterprise capabilities or full-service, I don't think BlueHornet is up to the task. If you are a SMB with more basic needs and a budget, BlueHornet can be a good choice. I would rank it in the middle of the ESP pack. If I were choosing an ESP and looking closely at BlueHornet, I would recommend looking at Adestra and Maropost as well. I think the three platforms are similar in features and capabilities. Adestra probably has the best support of the three, but the time zone difference (they are in the UK) can be a factor. Maropost's support is definitely the worst. All one gets is text messaging to an off-shore team. With Blue Hornet, you get a call a person on the phone.
