ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

Return Path

* Ask what you're looking to achieve with your email program; what benefits/added value will Return Path provide that your current ESP cannot* Ensure you're scoping the entire project, so that Return Path's efforts will provide valuable feedback * I found them to be very transparent about their methodology and expertise, so lay what you need on the line and they'll be very open and honest as to if they can help you or not.

Pros

  • The automation interface is fairly intuitive to work through and offers powerful, flexible features.
  • For the price and features it offers, it's the best value of any automation service that exists today.
  • It has a TON of options for the advanced user to tinker and test with.

  • Individualized attention. They really dug in to understand our products and services.
  • Easy-to-understand training and actionable items that you can sustain over a long period of time.
  • They're embedded in our instance of Exact Target, so I'm able to review the entire email program and don't have to open up a separate tool to gather this information.

Cons

  • One-to-one email automation (all automations have unsubscribe / impersonal req'd fields)
  • Sometimes the Chrome plugin does not work properly.
  • The email builder could use improvement on the UX end.

Return Path helps us stay ahead of the curve and are a partner in helping us optimize our email program. They also keep us up-to-date on email laws and the changing ecosystem so that we are prepared and ready for changes, whether they're behavioral, legal or technology-driven. I definitely consider Return Path a necessary ingredient to sustaining a healthy email program.

Alternatives Considered

I think overall ActiveCampaign is more of an all-in-one solution than other similar products we have tried. The price is also a factor, ActiveCampaign is much more affordable and still has great support. I think that the editor and sequences in ActiveCampaign are more natural and user-friendly than Infusionsoft and MailChimp.

When reviewing competitors to do the audit and to give us insight into our deliverability, Return Path seemed to have a more strategic sense of the issue and they were able to dive deep to get to the root cause, whereas some of the competitors where diagnosing on the phone before understanding the magnitude of the issue and the fragmented system that was in use; they wanted to sell their product vs. understand and help fix the issue

Return on Investment

  • We saved hours of emails & phone calls with our onboarding automation and custom options.
  • The CRM has custom fields option that makes it easy to create a deadline funnel based on the custom field information.
  • I wish ActiveCampaign could send automated emails that did not appear so impersonal.

  • Can more quickly identify issues as we're able to get very granular into the details of how our email program is performing. For instance, seeing how quickly customers were migrating to opening their email on mobile devices has caused the reworking of the template to become a priority.
  • Broader reach of emails with improved deliverability, therefore improved conversion.
  • Increased employee efficiency as we're able to monitor performance in real time.
