ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is well suited for basic scenarios such as daily emailing, follow-up emails, invites, thank you emails or reminders. If you want to create nurturing campaigns with multiple possibilities, AC is also pretty effective with the automation builder. If you want to do very personalized automated email campaigns, ActiveCampaign might not be the best tool to use.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Email Suited is great for businesses who send a lot of emails out on a regular basis, who have to manage many different distributions or email subscriptions, and who are looking for help managing audiences and automating responses. It might be less suited for an organization that does not use email communication or who just sends out 1-2 emails per week.

Pros

  • Automation campaigns are excellent in ActiveCampaign. It allows granular control over what happens when to whom and how. You can create very complex automated campaigns to nurture leads at the right time with the right content.
  • Ability to create custom pipelines is great as it allows us to cater to different sales processes that vary depending on customer type and/or different services, so we can track the right information in a flow that makes sense in specific situations.
  • Sending 1-to-1 emails in CRM that are tracked so we know when contacts open emails.
  • Chrome extension for Gmail is really useful to access contact data within emails in Gmail and being able to track emails sent in Gmail.

  • Sends client confirmations when they subscribe to a newsletter, sign up for a conference, or place an order with our company (SourceMedia). We don't have to hire an agency to send these for us.
  • Manages newsletter subscriptions and allows us to deploy on specific dates/times.
  • Helps us discover and manage the correct audience base per newsletter, and automates the distributions so we don't have to do it manually.

Cons

  • Unavailability of incoming text messaging integration. They should integrate this feature for better engagement.
  • Sometimes I have difficulties creating my campaign through the HTML builder. I think it happens because of some bugs.
  • Its pricing is very steep for a small company or for a starter.

  • Customer Service. It took quite some time to find a support "partner". Overall Salesforce account management and service is not the greatest. Not sure if it is due to their rapid growth or sheer arrogance. I now have found someone that is great from a support level but it took about 2 years and during that time we had many "hard meetings" to address our issues.
  • When using SQL one of the pain points is that you have to output everything into a Data Extension which has to be built before you can run the queries, you can't connect a 3rd party tool like Navicat, RazorSQL to get outputs while you are writing queries. So it can be a daunting task especially when you are building complex campaigns and need to see results immediately.
  • Copying certain components like Data Extensions. Sometimes you may want to repurpose data but you can't just copy a data extension, you have to build it again. You can copy structure but not data, and there is no tool for it. The same for business units, we use a production and testing business unit. We build applications in the testing bu but then have to manually recreate everything in production.

They also perform annual reviews in person that provides us with market trends, new tools and features, performance metrics, and new content recommendations. I think the tool is easy to use, protects a company from the spam legislation and manages subscribers very well. It is simple to create a non-complex email. I like the survey function on the email tool as well. Overall usability is quite easy and no necessary to have an IT background or extensive knowledge to use. It is helpful, though, to have an understanding of HTML for formatting at this point.

Upgrades and timing of the upgrades were communicated well and planned during off hours for our work. If we did have a campaign scheduled during that time, it would kick-off after the system was back active. There were a few unplanned system down times, but it was a rare occurrence and those times were also short in duration.

Exact Target performs well and is relatively easy to learn. It handles subscriber management well, and is easy to organize lists and segregation of those subscribers. Emails are easy to classify and group together for re-use or resending to different demographics of the recipients. The product is reliable, and metrics of the campaign results are easy to obtain and interpret.

Easy to implement, with simple emails and solutions initially created. More advanced usage of the tool and more advanced subscriber attribute usage was implemented during later phases when the knowledge of the tool increased. Monitoring success and results of email campaigns were done at a high level initially, but not fully used until the tool and email marketing as a whole was better understood in the corporation.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign is reasonably priced and provides the most powerful suite of features for email marketing, email automation, and CRM features. I love the power of integrating my email marketing tool with my website and sales funnels. The automation options are endless and almost overwhelming. This is exactly the type of tool we need to creatively create solutions for our clients. ActiveCampaign is ahead of the curve when it comes to the future of relationship marketing.

We had approximately 20,000 recipients of most email campaigns, with some higher amounts and some smaller campaigns. The tools is easy to use and the recipient list size is really not a factor in the complexity or work to create and email campaign. Our campaigns could just have easily been sent to many more people, with virtually no additional work.

Return on Investment

  • ActiveCampaign couldn't be mapped to any specific ROI partially due to the clunky reporting interface. We couldn't backtrack into any specific objectives like purchase decisions or course signups because it was too difficult to map those website actions to the specific campaigns.
  • The biggest value AC delivered was in terms of time saved creating specific drip campaigns. Cloning funnels, making edits, adding new branches was fast and easy and allowed us to iterate and move on to other things.
