When choosing a marketing automation system, it is important to think of what exactly you want it to do. I think no matter what you are hoping to get out of a marketing automation platform, you can achieve it with ActiveDEMAND. It can be used for simple/basic marketing email sending and campaign execution or it can be used to develop a microsite, create sales and marketing kiosks, run multi-step campaigns, host protected assets or whatever you want to do with it. You can easily choose (or ignore) the modules and features to be as creative as you choose to be.

If you are in the business of marketing, Infusionsoft is the best software out there. If you are generating leads, sending mass emails and/or tracking a customer database, Infusionsoft will help you tremendously. If you only communicate and advertise a couple times a year, you will not see the return of investment that comes from the project. We've been using the platform for over 2 years now and still have barely scratched the surface of its full capabilities

Pros

  • Template development and brand management - ActiveDEMAND makes it simple to maintain your brand identity and a consistent look and feel across campaigns using templates and brand identities that are easy to set up and easy to incorporate into every piece of collateral you develop.
  • Use of variables for replicated content - This is super convenient! Templates can be created and then the campaign can be cloned (in its entirety or just the assets you need) and reused allowing for simple updates to be made to the variables in minutes. This makes executing campaigns very simple and quick once your templates are built the way you want them.
  • Responsive design - This is a MUST in modern digital marketing and ActiveDEMAND does this really well. You can view all screen size renders as previews as you build your assets and all the modules are built to work with responsive technology so you can be confident that the assets you create and share with customers won't break and will look great on all devices.
  • It just works. - Everything from creating logic steps to editing the items you create just works really really well.
  • Support - the support team has been amazing. Live chat and ticket submission facilities make it easy to get help when you need it and tickets are resolved quickly and effectively. There is also a good knowledge base of self help articles available online.

  • Tracking is super simple. Infusionsoft offers many ways to keep track of customer profiles, conversations, emails sent ect. It is very customizable
  • Customization. Infusionsoft is the most versatile and customizable platform our company has used. You can make Infusionsoft do practically anything you need in terms of marketing, communication and tracking.

Cons

  • Reporting - Though the reporting is extensive and very very good... I sometimes miss a simplified view of email opens/clicks/link clicks etc.
  • Don't get me wrong, you can get to this data in ActiveDEMAND relatively easily, the default views through the campaign dashboard are just quite detailed (which some people would probably prefer) and I just don't think that we need that level of reporting on first glance. That being said, I do love the option to drill down and uncover the complex detailed data when i do want it (ActiveDEMAND is very good at this).
  • One element of reporting that I would also like would be an event registrant report showing all registered people (this part exists) and their responses on the registration form they completed to register for the event. (These things would be dietary restrictions, industry, customized responses to other event related questions).
  • I also wish the reports autorefreshed more frequently.
  • ICS Files - Right now there are work arounds for loading an ICS file (Calendar meeting invite file) that can be accessed in campaign assets. I just wish this was more native to the tool.
  • Archive Filing - Now, first of all, it is so amazing that ActiveDEMAND even has an archiving feature... I LOVE this. One small downside, however, is that the archiving cannot be organized using a folder structure or anything. I would like to be able to group my live events together, then group my webinars together etc.

  • Infusionsoft could improve their customer support. They would like to see everyone use their online forum and blogs to seek solutions rather than calling them for answers. While I completely understand this method, it can be difficult to find answers quickly.
  • Infusionsoft will log you out every so often (for security purposes) which can be very annoying when working on a large project. Make sure to always save your work!

To be honest, we've invested so much time in setting up Infusionsoft, I"m not willing to start over with a new software and it does 90% of what I want so I'm happy with the product. Plus their customer service is stellar and I really appreciate that.

OMG, it's all in one and that compromises everything, fundamentally. If you want a race car, invest in a race car. If you want a dune buggy, get that. If you want a boat that floats, go for it.

Again there is so much online support that users can find on Infusionsoft. From the corporate website and call center, to users groups located around the country, and ICCs who provide online resources, coaching and more, finding support for Infusionsoft is an easy task!

This training is taught often to the lowest common denominator so as to help as many customers of theirs as possible. We do the training and coaching and implementations for our clients. But clients who I know who have been to their training get trained well. The gap that can exist lies in you doing your part and really investing in using and building out the application.The training and education is only as good as your willingness to apply it.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveDEMAND is much more robust than most of the above products. It does more and provides more detailed analytics. It is also very user friendly. The user interface is nice and it is very easy to navigate the tool. The brand identity and replicated content are two areas where ActiveDEMAND really shines compared to competitors.

The others are not trying to be all things to all people. The others don't pretend their solution is the end-all-be-all to save small business owners. They are not all in one and don't pretend to be, regardless of the price points, from lower to higher. We used Infusionsoft because I, as the owner of the company, was willing to invest hundreds of hours learning and using the system. Plus, I paid out thousands of dollars over the first several years for others to help me integrate it with our marketing campaigns because I am not a programmer and never will be. I enjoy doing this kind of work on top of the coaching and advising I do for a living. Then I made automation and content marketing a natural extension of my business. It complimented by business model, until recently, when we found a better solution that does not try to be all things to all people and save the world.

Pricing is user and email and function based. Way too many pay walls and not native function for scaling. It's scaleable with NASA level marketing automation talent you must pay to engage. Otherwise, it gets expensive quickly for scaling to a true small business, which is what they target. Over 25 users and you're screwed. Look at the competition first, evaluate what you really need for your business and start there. Keep it simple, build your cash flow and confidence in the people you hired to make this work and then scale. Don't get sucked into the dream that this thing will help you sell your book to millions and you get famous while hanging on your boat or whatever. Building a small business is hard enough. Adding software often adds complexity in order to successfully scale.
