ActiveDEMAND

When choosing a marketing automation system, it is important to think of what exactly you want it to do. I think no matter what you are hoping to get out of a marketing automation platform, you can achieve it with ActiveDEMAND. It can be used for simple/basic marketing email sending and campaign execution or it can be used to develop a microsite, create sales and marketing kiosks, run multi-step campaigns, host protected assets or whatever you want to do with it. You can easily choose (or ignore) the modules and features to be as creative as you choose to be.

Oracle Eloqua

If you are sending some fairly basic, simply designed emails, Eloqua is perfect for you! It shares an easy tracking system and basic metrics after each campaign is sent out, and you can schedule emails in advance and specify details about how they are sent. While the templates are fairly standard, they are easy to update and work with, and if you don't have very intricate designs you're using, they will work just fine. The emails are mobile friendly and send quickly, and overall the system is simple to use and understand. There are options for enhanced functionality, A/B testing, and more for those who want to go deep into their email campaigns, but it's also a great system for simply sending out communications and tracking them, particularly if you send a lot of emails and just want a standard format to go out whenever you need it.

Pros

  • Template development and brand management - ActiveDEMAND makes it simple to maintain your brand identity and a consistent look and feel across campaigns using templates and brand identities that are easy to set up and easy to incorporate into every piece of collateral you develop.
  • Use of variables for replicated content - This is super convenient! Templates can be created and then the campaign can be cloned (in its entirety or just the assets you need) and reused allowing for simple updates to be made to the variables in minutes. This makes executing campaigns very simple and quick once your templates are built the way you want them.
  • Responsive design - This is a MUST in modern digital marketing and ActiveDEMAND does this really well. You can view all screen size renders as previews as you build your assets and all the modules are built to work with responsive technology so you can be confident that the assets you create and share with customers won't break and will look great on all devices.
  • It just works. - Everything from creating logic steps to editing the items you create just works really really well.
  • Support - the support team has been amazing. Live chat and ticket submission facilities make it easy to get help when you need it and tickets are resolved quickly and effectively. There is also a good knowledge base of self help articles available online.

  • The template system Eloqua uses is very simple - it's easy to upload photos, add links, etc. There are not a ton of formatting options or opportunities for specific customizations, but you can do any basic designs easily and quickly. The templates are flexible and it's easy to move blocks of text or images around in the template if you are reformatting an older email, as I often do.
  • The campaign tracking is very easy to follow - there are many different metrics you can run on your campaigns if you're looking for detailed statistics, but if you just want to check any bouncebacks and see the open rate, it is very clear on every campaign you send. Emails go out quickly and basic metrics are right there for you to follow.
  • The sender settings are very customizable - you can change the "sent as" name to whatever you want, as well as the "reply to" name, so it can appear to be coming from, say, an executive, though the email address might be a communications email. It's very simple to update any of this information from the template and customize headers and footers appropriately.
  • It is very quick to upload "segments"/listserves based on Excel documents. Managing lists of thousands of employees, I often simply upload a new excel file of their email addresses every month or so to keep my lists updated - it's simpler than trying to add in new individual profiles.

Cons

  • Reporting - Though the reporting is extensive and very very good... I sometimes miss a simplified view of email opens/clicks/link clicks etc.
  • Don't get me wrong, you can get to this data in ActiveDEMAND relatively easily, the default views through the campaign dashboard are just quite detailed (which some people would probably prefer) and I just don't think that we need that level of reporting on first glance. That being said, I do love the option to drill down and uncover the complex detailed data when i do want it (ActiveDEMAND is very good at this).
  • One element of reporting that I would also like would be an event registrant report showing all registered people (this part exists) and their responses on the registration form they completed to register for the event. (These things would be dietary restrictions, industry, customized responses to other event related questions).
  • I also wish the reports autorefreshed more frequently.
  • ICS Files - Right now there are work arounds for loading an ICS file (Calendar meeting invite file) that can be accessed in campaign assets. I just wish this was more native to the tool.
  • Archive Filing - Now, first of all, it is so amazing that ActiveDEMAND even has an archiving feature... I LOVE this. One small downside, however, is that the archiving cannot be organized using a folder structure or anything. I would like to be able to group my live events together, then group my webinars together etc.

  • It's a little finicky in that sometimes if steps are not followed in the absolute correct order it might not work - or even if they are followed in the right order it might not work. I recall trying to get Eloqua to pull up information on a campaign & on the 5th try it finally worked, but I had done everything the same way leading up to that 5th attempt. I would say these glitches/bugs happen about 5-10% of the time using Eloqua & it is a big pain. It is really hard to tell a boss there is an issue only to show it to them & have it work flawlessly.
  • Interface is a bit confusing, lots of drop downs make it harder to navigate - it's nice that all the information is accessible from one main screen, but essentially there are hundreds of operations that can be done on this & the system is not built to account for how it's being used - so it's not intuitive to what users are doing with the software, so if I always/only use steps r,z, & y - I still have to navigate to them in several clicks - no saved favorites.
  • Aside the above point on the interface - it could really benefit from a facelift, if you've never used it before, it will be very obvious you are working on a 10+ year old system. Not that new features haven't been added over time, but the look & feel of buttons, layout, font, etc. is due for a makeover.

Price is always a factor. Switching from one platform for another is almost never a lateral move. If you intend to switch purely for monetary reasons, you may want to reconsider due to the large step backwards to do so. This will cost more than the savings would catch up to in years. If you have legitimate concerns about the platforms performance, I would do a lot of research to make sure the competitor doesn't have the same or worse. Also, another thing to consider is with a newer platform competitor means fewer experts to turn to, either as consultants or new hire employees. A lot of the times customers tend to think the grass is greener on the other side, but really the grass is greener where you water it.

Oracle is usable but it does have a learning curve. While the learning tools give you access to navigation and how to do simple tasks - trying to figure out complex items such as editing past campaign elements or finding the proper report can take a bit. Overall, you'll need to sit in front of the system and not be afraid to get your hands dirty and touch some buttons. Nothing terrible will happen and you'll learn a ton making it easy to use

Alternatives Considered

ActiveDEMAND is much more robust than most of the above products. It does more and provides more detailed analytics. It is also very user friendly. The user interface is nice and it is very easy to navigate the tool. The brand identity and replicated content are two areas where ActiveDEMAND really shines compared to competitors.

I have no insight into alternative products. I see some overlap in capability with OBIEE, but the overall value prop is different & would not consider them to be competing products.

It would be a 10 if not for some lag/load problems that in hindsight might have been scale related. Asking Eloqua about their biggest deployment sizes, scalability figures would be a big benefit to evaluators. I came into an environment where Eloqua was already being used so I missed out on seeing the transformative before & after effect - but it does provide a wealth of options for personalizing the automated interaction a user experiences based on their interaction - options to help prevent literature fatigue, re-engage, check-in/brand messaging experiences can all be weaved into the experience & easily applied.

Return on Investment

  • Simplified email marketing and event management
  • Better tracking of leads
  • Better intelligence about which initiatives are working well and where future opportunities lie
  • Less reliant on IT department/third party to execute our online marketing
No photo available
  • We only provide support for our clients, so I cannot share hard numbers, but we do notice our clients getting much more leads of better quality out of their marketing efforts.
  • By aligning Eloqua CRM integration with business flows, we see our clients are learning how to qualify leads and how to follow up on them.
  • At the same time, using Eloqua allows them to close the loop on marketing efforts, which gives marketeers the ability to validate their budgets.
