When choosing a marketing automation system, it is important to think of what exactly you want it to do. I think no matter what you are hoping to get out of a marketing automation platform, you can achieve it with ActiveDEMAND. It can be used for simple/basic marketing email sending and campaign execution or it can be used to develop a microsite, create sales and marketing kiosks, run multi-step campaigns, host protected assets or whatever you want to do with it. You can easily choose (or ignore) the modules and features to be as creative as you choose to be.

Pros

  • Template development and brand management - ActiveDEMAND makes it simple to maintain your brand identity and a consistent look and feel across campaigns using templates and brand identities that are easy to set up and easy to incorporate into every piece of collateral you develop.
  • Use of variables for replicated content - This is super convenient! Templates can be created and then the campaign can be cloned (in its entirety or just the assets you need) and reused allowing for simple updates to be made to the variables in minutes. This makes executing campaigns very simple and quick once your templates are built the way you want them.
  • Responsive design - This is a MUST in modern digital marketing and ActiveDEMAND does this really well. You can view all screen size renders as previews as you build your assets and all the modules are built to work with responsive technology so you can be confident that the assets you create and share with customers won't break and will look great on all devices.
  • It just works. - Everything from creating logic steps to editing the items you create just works really really well.
  • Support - the support team has been amazing. Live chat and ticket submission facilities make it easy to get help when you need it and tickets are resolved quickly and effectively. There is also a good knowledge base of self help articles available online.

  • The email templates are easy to set up and allow us to automate our marketing efforts very effectively.
  • The ability to segment our lists has proven very valuable. List segmentation allows the right message to get to the right vertical markets at the right time.
  • The marketing calendar gives the whole team an outline of what marketing initiatives are hitting on any given day.

Cons

  • Reporting - Though the reporting is extensive and very very good... I sometimes miss a simplified view of email opens/clicks/link clicks etc.
  • Don't get me wrong, you can get to this data in ActiveDEMAND relatively easily, the default views through the campaign dashboard are just quite detailed (which some people would probably prefer) and I just don't think that we need that level of reporting on first glance. That being said, I do love the option to drill down and uncover the complex detailed data when i do want it (ActiveDEMAND is very good at this).
  • One element of reporting that I would also like would be an event registrant report showing all registered people (this part exists) and their responses on the registration form they completed to register for the event. (These things would be dietary restrictions, industry, customized responses to other event related questions).
  • I also wish the reports autorefreshed more frequently.
  • ICS Files - Right now there are work arounds for loading an ICS file (Calendar meeting invite file) that can be accessed in campaign assets. I just wish this was more native to the tool.
  • Archive Filing - Now, first of all, it is so amazing that ActiveDEMAND even has an archiving feature... I LOVE this. One small downside, however, is that the archiving cannot be organized using a folder structure or anything. I would like to be able to group my live events together, then group my webinars together etc.

  • The reporting through GoodData is a bit cumbersome. It takes some getting used to to use effectively.
  • The ability to have custom opportunity close / won choices. As a company who uses parent/child opportunities to track large projects where we could be submitting several bids for the same project through different customers we are not able to use any of the opportunity reports within Pardot. As we can't exclude any lost "children" from the formulas.
  • Need the ability to add custom filters for adding prospects to lists. For example being able to say do this AND this, OR this AND this. Right now you only get the option of all ANDs or all ORs.

As of right now we have not seen any other program that integrates as seamlessly into our Salesforce platform. We have barely scratched the surface of all the features and use cases. It would be irresponsible to make a move to another platform in the near future. We have not come up against any limitations that would prompt a need to switch

There have been a couple of service incidents over the past few months. I'm not sure if it has to do with Pardot integrating their infrastructure with ExactTarget. However, they responded well with proactive communication and a debrief as to what happened.

Pardot support is tremendous. The knowledge base and in-application targeted help articles and videos are thorough and straightforward. If those don't do it, Pardot has office hours every business day with members of the team available to answer anything. I've called twice and they are incredibly helpful.

The trainers at the Pardot user conference (Elevate and Connections) were very knowledgeable and presented the material well. Again, the content was targeted to more of a new user audience, and was not really relevant for folks who had been using the product for 2+ years.

Pardot's online training touches on all topics briefly and vaguely without much indepth exploration into how a final outcome could look, such as Nurturing Campaigns, Email templates, landing page templates, etc...The only true way to uncover Pardot's full capabilities is to have Front End design and coding experience. Without this key skill set, I would not recommend Pardot to another business.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveDEMAND is much more robust than most of the above products. It does more and provides more detailed analytics. It is also very user friendly. The user interface is nice and it is very easy to navigate the tool. The brand identity and replicated content are two areas where ActiveDEMAND really shines compared to competitors.

We didn't test any other products. Pardot was a given when I joined our team as the marketing manager. Once Salesforce acquired the software / technology, it was an even bigger slam dunk on why we should purchase Pardot for our company. I don't know of any other software out there that is so focused on the SMB B2B market. They make us look a lot bigger than we actually are. That was a big selling point for us.

  • As a global company with office hours in the US, the back-end automation has allowed us to respond to customer inquires 24/7 - 365.
  • We are now able to send out links to a product questionnaire to help better qualify leads for our sales reps. Giving them laser focus on which leads to follow up on instead of chasing rainbows and puppy dogs that might not be "real" leads.
  • Real time alerts for the sales team via the Lead Deck allow an account executive some x-ray vision into what an important client is doing right now on our website.
