Likelihood to Recommend

ActiveDocs

There are not a lot of competitors to compare this product with, but ActiveDocs holds its own as a very useful software for the need. I recommend doing a demo to see how the process works, but it's rather streamlined and easy to create a template and produce a document from it.

Kofax Power PDF

Kofax Power PDF is well suited for creation, editing, excerpting, and combining .pdf files. These capabilities are invaluable in the creation of a single, coherent, .pdf document that has been drawn from a number of different source applications (e.g., Word, Excel, JPEG images, etc.).I have not encountered a scenario in my work that Kofax Power PDF could not handle, though my needs are pretty straightforward.

Pros

ActiveDocs

  • Easy to use for basic users, extremely configurable for advanced users.
  • Deep Microsoft Word integration ensuring consistent document output.

Kofax Power PDF

  • The security feature to sign documents works very well.
  • Extracting a portion of a document as needed is very helpful, it even allows the ability to grab a portion of a page to create a new document.
  • The typewriter feature is fantastic letting me fill in questionnaires or forms that don't have form fields.
  • The combine all feature works perfectly to combine all the financial reports into a consolidated report.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Cons

ActiveDocs

  • The built-in template designs are a bit lackluster. While there are numerous, they all have the same blase style and formatting
  • The built-in template designs are not very diverse and could be expanded upon.

Kofax Power PDF

  • I miss a Go To function. Yes, you can type a page number in the bottom bar, but that is tedious.
  • I miss a chance to better control the OCR function (exclude stuff that is in the way, such as headers, footers, line numbers, etc.
  • I'd like a more accurate FormTyper. It still leaves out too many fields of a scanned form.

I would very likely continue to update and use Power PDF because I am familiar with it, it has a reasonable price, and continues to provide value for the price. I work in a very dynamic field where I must continually adapt; It's beneficial to use a product that remains consistant in its user interface while improving its features.

Usability

Very good usability overall. Any user can pick this up and run with it. HotDocs, the closest competitor, has similar end-user usability, but from a designer of templates perspective, ActiveDocs definitely has the edge in this regard. I would recommend this for any company that mass produces documents from templates as deliverables.

Most tasks are intuitive, but the ones, I have cited already. To get a 10, the Help file should be rewritten. It is not thorough, confused, and sometimes inconsistent.Menus are well structured, although the Page Rotated section of the ribbon looks a bit out of place.Recent files are well located front and center.

The software overall is very excellent. It responds quickly and produces documents well. The integration with systems makes data input easy. Questions can be designed to allow further expansion of template creation/customization. The rules section is very useful for complicated If/Than/Else style templates. Although experience and training help, the software is very user-friendly out of the box.

Pages nearly always load at the expected rapid speed. Some documents that print quickly from Adobe Reader print much more slowly from Power PDF. I have never generated a report - that's a feature I didn't know existed until now and do not know what it's for

Support Rating

ActiveDocs

ActiveDocs 8.0

ActiveDocs can be a considerably complex product because your use cases can be potentially endless. In our experience, when we have come across a problem or issue with the product ActiveDoc's support has always responded to our queries within 24 hours. Support is only provided via email in 95% of cases. Each year your support and maintenance includes support hours. These are used when you contact support and your issue is not found to be a bug or problem with the product (completely fair and understandable). When we've identified or discovered bugs (mainly with the latest version of Word) it is patched by the next release. They typically release about 4-5 updates per year.

I didn’t contact support so I have no experience to date but I have looked through the help material. Others have said there are YouTube videos and I would certainly use them if I had a problem, but maybe I am a simple user, not an advanced professional. I do think writing help material is really difficult though, and Kofax seem to have considered lots of possibilities. And there’s no paperclip pop up.

I got an overview of the product from my predecessor who was about to retire from the job I now hold. He did not go into very many of the features and probably only knew about the ones he used most frequently.

We watched the training videos and tested out the features and functionality side by side. Some features are not used on a regular basis is it is convenient to go back and review training on that particular functionality when needed.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveDocs

ActiveDocs and HotDocs are very similar. HotDocs requires training or a technically savvy mind to pick up and run with. ActiveDocs seems much more user-friendly and easy to use. HotDocs, however, can produce some very intricate documents based on the templates. Both use rules and question-based information intake. Another benefit of ActiveDocs is its integration with numerous systems including Office 365.

Kofax Power PDF

I needed a program similar to Kofax Power PDF on my personal home computer. I couldn't afford Kofax for this sometimes use scenario. So I looked around and decided on Soda PDF. I was not as pleased. The interface was not as familiar and the way it was marketed, I am still not sure what features I have available to me and what features I need to pay for. Sure, it saved me some money, but I have had a less pleasing user experience and only really dabbled with some of the basic features. I should have spent the extra dollars and got my own version of the Kofax Power PDF.

Not really familiar since I'm the only person who uses it.But in the past it has been my understanding that Power PDF was offered only on a single-license basis, so it's been expensive for me to use it at home and at work because I had to pay for it on my own. In my current position management supports it so I at least only have to pay for it once.

Return on Investment

ActiveDocs

  • Repeatable, consistent output ensures document generation isn't where time can be wasted.
  • Stringent logic ensures compliance and removes the opportunity for user error.

Kofax Power PDF

  • In the small business environment the greatest advantage is the time saving of multi-usage within one software rather than having to use 3 or more different ones.
  • The cost of the one piece of software is clearly cheaper than two or three.
  • Easily managing to store output of all documents on a computer with easy back up to file rather than online.
