If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Adobe Analytics

Adobe Analytics is highly configurable with many custom variables - there's yet to be a tracking/reporting situation that we couldn't resolve/answer. They'll be additional value if you're using other Adobe tools such as; Target, CQ5, Campaign, Media Optimizer as these products are much better integrated now, for example; it's possible to push insights from AA into CQ5 for changing content on your website. Multi-Channel Attribution isn't available in the "Standard" version, if you need this you'll need to pay more and upgrade to "Premium" - this feature is available for free with Google Analytics.

  • The report outputs can vary across different types such as HTML, PDF, and Excel
  • Their open source offering is very sufficient
  • There are great boards and blogs for developers and engineers to expand and use their features.
  • The people from the company that I've worked with are professional and courteous.

  • Calculates potential ROI-Based on online funnels, user data and conversion goals the program accurately calculates potential ROI. This is extremely helpful when making budget decisions for new campaigns.
  • Segmenting-The software has a powerful engine that makes segmenting user groups which has allowed us to convert clients into paying customers.

Cons

  • Anything that I would consider an area for improvement and have asked about from the company is a area where they are already doing development and refinement and when it is available it comes as a simple upgrade.

  • Sometimes, the default number of variables is not enough
  • With AA v15, some of the organization within the dropdowns has become less clear
  • Dashboards in the tool aren't always unique to the user and persist across profiles (could use more customization for this)

We are satisfied with the product performance and are not seeking alternative solutions. Once you learn how to use this software effectively, it becomes very valuable. You just have to struggle through the learning curve

Adobe SiteCatalyst has great actual uptime in the most standard sense, but long lag times in data during critical time periods (i.e. Holidays) I would consider to be an issue with availability.

For the most part, Adobe SiteCatalyst reports work ok, but there are cases in which reports take a long time to return. These cases are usually when too much data has been stored in Conversion Variables (eVars).

Customer service has always been the Achilles heel for this product. Support is often slow to respond, if at all. Account management has seemed to get better recently.

Myself and others have found the in-person training ok, but not outstanding. Trainers are good at explaining how to use the product features, but sometimes lack "real-world" experience on how to use the product as they are people who have often not previously been web analysts. There is also a shortcoming in company-provided training on advanced uses of the product. The implementation training is very good.

The online training for Adobe SiteCatalyst consists of short product videos. These are ok, but only go so far. For a while Adobe charged a fee for this, but recently made these available for free. There are many great blog posts that help users learn how to apply the product as well.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used extensively as a developemnt tool and by 10s of thousands of end users. Virtually every line of business in our large financial institution uses Actuate - many who are unaware because the components are built into our home grown applications.

Alternatives Considered

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

Adobe is fairly robust and similar to Google Analytics however as a paid service it is not exceptionally better. It provides much the same data that Google Analytics does and in some areas is not as strong. Page-level reports are more difficult in Adobe. Selecting a group of pages for a simple report that trends growth to a handful of similar pages, for instance, is more difficult in Adobe for our organization. Tracking revenue is also a challenge but this is a site-specific issue and occurs with Google Anlaytics as well. That being said, as a paid platform, Adobe should be able to work around this issue. Data Warehouse and report builder functions are great, but require another plug in, GA allows easier download of data in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • I have increased my marketing reach by understanding how people are using my website and been able to increase the amount of repeat customers. I attribute this to ease of navigation as a result of Adobe Analytics and my push to understand it.
  • I spend less time on campaigns that do not work and am more responsive to what viewers want.
  • I am able to see the exact point at which a customer leaves my site and have some insight into why that is happening where it is.
