If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Pros

  • End user ability to customize Business Intelligence Reporting Tools (BIRT)
  • Actuate Support is usually prompt and helpful.
  • Ability to embed in other applications, has extendable code for authenticating/authorizing users.

  • It is easy to connect your datasources and it supports over 15 different type of datasources.
  • It is easy to create your first dashboards. You can learn the basics just by trying it out. It also has great documentation to find the solution for more difficult problems.
  • You can save your data into Chartio's datastores. Using these datastores on your dashboards makes them super fast to refresh without querying your own database. You can set when you would like to refresh your datastores.

Cons

  • Licensing is a bear.
Amy Broome profile photo
  • I really miss usage statistics. We don't know who, when and how many times were viewing our dashboards. It is a real pain point when you have created hundreds of dashboards and you need to maintain those too which are not used any more.
  • Would be nice to have version control to easily revert changes.
  • Data-stores are limited to 1 million lines. Using multiple filters on a dashboards makes hard to fit into this limit.

I am no longer working for the company that was using Actuate but I believe they would continue to use it because the stitching costs would be to high. It would require a complete rewrite of the reports and the never version of Actuate (BIRT) even required an almost complete report rewrite

Chartio has been very helpful for our organization. In the beginning figuring out how to set up charts took a little while, but that was learning how to use Chartio.

I use self learning materials. Pretty helpful. I find myself having to go back to the "drilldown" instructions though, and have a hard time finding hidden variables on a dashboard, so perhaps there is room for intuitive improvements (or maybe I'm just being lazy)

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used extensively as a developemnt tool and by 10s of thousands of end users. Virtually every line of business in our large financial institution uses Actuate - many who are unaware because the components are built into our home grown applications.

Chartio is being used departmentally by our regional market health managers as well as our data and tech team.

Alternatives Considered

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

Initially, we selected chartio because it was the easiest to connect to data and get going making visualizations. Ultimately, we moved away from Chartio because we needed a tool that would work as a buffer between our data structure and the visualizations. But majority of BI tools have this same problem

We support an enterprise library of core components and deploy thousands of reports for varying business cases. We have integrated our network security into the product ensuring data does not get in the hands of those without access.

It was pretty easy to share a report. I could grant read access or filter access - but not write access. I could also filter a report and then export to csv or pdf

A wide range of sources are available, but we only use SQL, so I can only comment on that. Integration is easy - you add a CRON job to enable the connection. If the connection is cut, Chartio won't inform you - we only find out next-time we look and the charts are unavailable.

Chartio has worked well as our datawarehouse has rapidly expanded, and the usability/performance hasn't seemed to have suffered. What we haven't yet realized is additional savings from additional users. We have some dashboard needs for users who truly just view of a few charts, and the licensing structure hasn't yet been structured in a way that would support that type of approach...having 50 "core" licenses, and then potentially several hundred view only licenses for partners that would use the application infrequently.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
