It depends on extensibility, set-up, access & style. Actuate performs fairly well, but has performance issues because it sits on top of eclipse, which sits on top of Java. Extensibility usually comes at that price. Set-up is fairly straightforward and it can be secured.

Chartio is very well suited to data analysis as it allows you to visualize and manipulate data very well.

Pros

  • Easy data import
  • Multiple levels of user security
Lynn Kutz profile photo
  • Filtering data by vertical - this allows the user to see the effects of different data points.
  • The ability to pull the data on to an Excel sheet - this allows further manipulation of the data and by the addition of formula etc.
  • Different dashboards allow the user to view the data in different ways different users may be fond of one view over another.

Cons

  • Limited report writing ability unless you implant the iServer applications
  • End users have little or no control over data displays
Lynn Kutz profile photo
  • Inability to immediately act on data from Chartio through Chartio's platform means we have to use other software to implement information gained from Chartio.
  • Data gained isn't live this means we can sometimes depending on the quarter be acting on less relevant data and we also cannot be as reactive because we have to wait a day before we know if our changes made based on data from Chartio is successful or not.

We continue to get more out of the product as they release new features. We also have a very happy user base here with Chartio as our dashboarding tool.

Lots of issues with touch targeting being off on mobile (iPhone 6) in safari and chrome. Dashboard and nav drop downs aren't usable. Can't arrange charts on mobile.

I use self learning materials. Pretty helpful. I find myself having to go back to the "drilldown" instructions though, and have a hard time finding hidden variables on a dashboard, so perhaps there is room for intuitive improvements (or maybe I'm just being lazy)

Breadth of Deployment

We have about 2300 licensed users, but probably less than 1/3 actually log in during a quarter time. Less than 10% would be considered proficient users.

All departments, all managers and above use the product.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has been in the industry a while and the open source community make going with Actuate's BIRT a stable decision. Changing report engines can be expensive, so going with a company with a good reputation helps long-term

I find that Chartio has less red tape. It allows endless options

As a developer, the report code itself cannot be diffed and the merged from one version of a report to another. If you have 2 developers working on the same report, the last developer's changes have to be manually implemented into the first developer's version of the report. You cannot use a tool such as WinMerge to merge differences from one report design into another. Or rather, you could but there's no guaruntee that it would work. This is a real bottleneck. You have to implement changes in the design tool

Chartio has worked well as our datawarehouse has rapidly expanded, and the usability/performance hasn't seemed to have suffered. What we haven't yet realized is additional savings from additional users. We have some dashboard needs for users who truly just view of a few charts, and the licensing structure hasn't yet been structured in a way that would support that type of approach...having 50 "core" licenses, and then potentially several hundred view only licenses for partners that would use the application infrequently.
Asa Pogrelis profile photo

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
