It depends on extensibility, set-up, access & style. Actuate performs fairly well, but has performance issues because it sits on top of eclipse, which sits on top of Java. Extensibility usually comes at that price. Set-up is fairly straightforward and it can be secured.

Chartio

Chartio is a great tool for building presentable dashboards. It can export, you can add read-only access, and it has permissions levels by dashboard for users. There are other data analysis tools that help to analyze the data, but few allow for such a nice presentation

Pros

OpenText Analytics

  • End user ability to customize Business Intelligence Reporting Tools (BIRT)
  • Actuate Support is usually prompt and helpful.
  • Ability to embed in other applications, has extendable code for authenticating/authorizing users.

Chartio

  • Directly connect to the actual data running our site.
  • Allow for advanced querying, filtering, and even user based permissions to see and edit the data.
  • Provide a great way to layout and communicate the data in visualizations and dashboards.

Cons

OpenText Analytics

  • Report rendering can take a long time for large reports (250,000+ pages) - we run these in batch over night
  • The deployment of production code from development to test to production enviroments can be complex due to the number of components that must compile

Chartio

  • The date slider is hyper annoying to use
  • When emails get sent as PDF, the formatting gets messed up if it's a graph dense dash.
  • It handles a lot of data, but it'd be great if it could handle and visualize more data.

There are some very complex performance reports, which can not be handled in other tools. If we want to create our own framework in any reporting tool then Actuate is the best choice

It has become a core part of the business in terms of identifying the health of our network. If we grow and there are certain things that might not fit well with Chartio (e.g. we'd want to store snapshots of every single day's dash instead of seeing realtime data), it might make sense to move some of the data analysis tool in-house if resources are available.

Chartio has been very helpful for our organization. In the beginning figuring out how to set up charts took a little while, but that was learning how to use Chartio.

I use self learning materials. Pretty helpful. I find myself having to go back to the "drilldown" instructions though, and have a hard time finding hidden variables on a dashboard, so perhaps there is room for intuitive improvements (or maybe I'm just being lazy)

Alternatives Considered

OpenText Analytics

We looked at a few other competitor's products but based on value for features chose Actuate for its total cost of ownership.

We have an older version of Crystal Reports that just hung around as the company grew. Now that we have more users, it's not feasible to continue with the limited Crystal experts that we have in order to get reporting out across the entire company. What we were aiming for was a product that you could sit a regular user in front of and have them create their own charts with minimal help. The flow of the product allows for someone who has never seen the interface before to get what they need in a short amount of time. We weren't experiencing that with Crystal Reports.

Chartio has worked well as our datawarehouse has rapidly expanded, and the usability/performance hasn't seemed to have suffered. What we haven't yet realized is additional savings from additional users. We have some dashboard needs for users who truly just view of a few charts, and the licensing structure hasn't yet been structured in a way that would support that type of approach...having 50 "core" licenses, and then potentially several hundred view only licenses for partners that would use the application infrequently.

Return on Investment

OpenText Analytics

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
