Scorecard without the Birt360 module is very limited in reporting and data displays. End users who are not computer savvy would have a difficult time using the advanced features

Datawatch Monarch

The product is especially useful when you have real-time and/or time series data to analyze. If you have more mundane, simpler requirements, other products might do the job you need for less money (there are even some decent open source visualization tools you can find.) I know the product is very widely used in capital markets applications to monitor and analyze risk and price and volume changes; if you're working in that area, I don't think there's a better tool to use.

Cons

  • Support for more databases, such as other BI tools.
  • There can be more graph types.

  • Moving fields around in a model can be very cumbersome because you can't overlay them.
  • Moving models between different versions of Monarch can be a pain.
  • I'd love to see a utility that would combine the field lists from a collection of models. This would help us standardize our field definitions.

There are some very complex performance reports, which can not be handled in other tools. If we want to create our own framework in any reporting tool then Actuate is the best choice

Datawatch recently repositioned Data Pump and essentially priced us out of the market. The initial investment was very inexpensive, but the yearly maintenance contract was viewed as being a little pricey. The only value of the contract was that it included software upgrades. The Professional Services portion of the contract that was meant to provide support was not viewed as being very effective or beneficial.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used extensively as a developemnt tool and by 10s of thousands of end users. Virtually every line of business in our large financial institution uses Actuate - many who are unaware because the components are built into our home grown applications.

Most of our users don't know they are using it, because it is embedded in CMOD.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has been in the industry a while and the open source community make going with Actuate's BIRT a stable decision. Changing report engines can be expensive, so going with a company with a good reputation helps long-term

Datawatch is very good value of money compared to QlikView; QlikView is really more of a BI tool and has a lot of functions that I didn't need. Datawatch is very strong in the real-time area where Tableau, Panorama, and Qlik don't do very well. If you need to set up a visual monitoring dashboard, Datawatch is the best product I've seen for that. if you want to do a lot of in depth statistical analysis of large databases, Tableau is probably a good option.

N/A. We don't use data source connections. We extract data from batch reports.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
