Scorecard without the Birt360 module is very limited in reporting and data displays. End users who are not computer savvy would have a difficult time using the advanced features

Geckoboard

The perfect scenario for Geckboard is a weekly/monthly dashboard that uses simple KPIs you need to display to a wide audience. This is not to use for a specific drill down.

Pros

  • The software can be tied to Actuate Basic which is much like MS Visual Basic and can provide an almost custom application feel to some reports.
  • Actuate had field movement tools that allowed a user to line rows up and disperse them across a report based off the width. Comparative tools like Crystal did not provide these.
  • The Actuate Server also gave easy access to review who had been running a report or reports via its web interface.

  • Simple Display
  • Great Customer Service
  • Advanced graphics

Cons

  • Report rendering can take a long time for large reports (250,000+ pages) - we run these in batch over night
  • The deployment of production code from development to test to production enviroments can be complex due to the number of components that must compile

  • Building the Geckoboard had limitations using MS Excel. It would be nice to have a cloud based platform to revise the display.
  • Needs to add more visualization graphs
  • Ability to add more pages to 1 Geckoboard like a website

Breadth of Deployment

We have about 2300 licensed users, but probably less than 1/3 actually log in during a quarter time. Less than 10% would be considered proficient users.

The system was only used by a few people.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has been in the industry a while and the open source community make going with Actuate's BIRT a stable decision. Changing report engines can be expensive, so going with a company with a good reputation helps long-term

Geckoboard is a great dashboard that offers value and simplicity. It is easy to train and use right away. The other systems are more expensive but offer more details.

Collaboration and Sharing

Basic scorecard without iServer and Birt360 modules are extremely limited in reporting ability. Scheduling pushed reports also fairly technical

It's easy to share a public viewable dashboard, but also ability to lock down via IP.

Data Integration

Easy to set up data imports from a variety of sources and use scripts to automatically import data. Manual imports and translators also very easy to use

It connects to most things I want but missing some key ones (like Adobe Cloud offerings). Doesn't really merge data. Is careful about over-use of quotas from given sources like GA.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
