e.Report Designer Professional and the report output is suited to application embedded reports - but we also use the product to publish information for data analysts and finance deeper analysis.

Hadoop

  • Less appropriate for small data sets
  • Works well for scenarios with bulk amount of data. They can surely go for Hadoop file system, having offline applications
  • It's not an instant querying software like SQL; so if your application can wait on the crunching of data, then use it
  • Not for real-time applications

Pros

  • In terms of extensibility this is the best reporting platform we have seen. You can build very sophisticated reports with different data sources, and extend the basic functionality with javscript code
  • Securing the BI system is also a strength and the system can be configured relatively easily.
  • Reports can be available on mobile devices
  • Good Javascript embedding framework does not require the site to be built in java

  • HDFS is reliable and solid, and in my experience with it, there are very few problems using it
  • Enterprise support from different vendors makes it easier to 'sell' inside an enterprise
  • It provides High Scalability and Redundancy
  • Horizontal scaling and distributed architecture

Cons

  • Anything that I would consider an area for improvement and have asked about from the company is a area where they are already doing development and refinement and when it is available it comes as a simple upgrade.

  • For now, Hadoop is doing great and is very productive.

Hadoop is organization-independent and can be used for various purposes ranging from archiving to reporting and can make use of economic, commodity hardware. There is also a lot of saving in terms of licensing costs - since most of the Hadoop ecosystem is available as open-source and is free

I found it really useful during my academic projects. Data handling for large data sets was easy with Hadoop. It used to work really fast for bigger data sets. I found it reliable.

Breadth of Deployment

The design tool is useful for basic reporting, but many reports require some experience in SQL and JavaScript. Java programming, though not a required skill for basic reports, is needed for better reporting and to access the more advanced features (such as debugging).

Alternatives Considered

It is vastly superior to these in many ways, for complex reporting it is a much more sophisticated solution. Visualizations are very good. Javascript extensibility is very powerful, others don't support this or as well. Pentaho and MS are both OLAP oriented. Pentaho is moving more toward big data, which was not our primary focus. Others are stuck in the Crystal Reports Band metaphor.

  • For real-time streaming, use Spark; can provide a stark contrast to the way MR works
  • Hadoop offers a scalable, cost-effective and highly available solution for big data storage and processing.
  • Amazon Redshift is somewhat closer to Hadoop. But to analyze Petabytes of data Hadoop as better performance.
  • Hadoop is being open source, is cheaper to use and do POCs for client

Collaboration and Sharing

Engineers can share and collaborate building tasks - e.g. One develope builds the report design while another builds the query. But I can't pass in a requirements template from a spreadsheet to construct the report. Collaboration is still strongly based on comminication between stakeholders and engineers rather than through automation

According to me, the data source connectivity of Hadoop is really good. I had faced any issues while using Hadoop for data source connectivity.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • Hadoop as a huge impact on reducing the cost of data storage in our organization.
  • Other then that it also serves as low-cost big data processing framework.
  • The use of commodity hardware for the physical layer greatly reduces technological dependency on proprietary products.
