If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Hadoop

1. How large are your data sets? If your answer is few gigabytes, Hadoop may be overkill for your needs.2. Do you require real-time analytical processing? If yes, Hadoop's map reduce may not be a great asset in that scenario.3. Do you want to want to process data in a batch processing fashion and scale for TeraBytes size clusters? Hadoop is definitely a great fit for your use case.

Pros

  • The report outputs can vary across different types such as HTML, PDF, and Excel
  • Their open source offering is very sufficient
  • There are great boards and blogs for developers and engineers to expand and use their features.
  • The people from the company that I've worked with are professional and courteous.

  • Provides a reliable distributed storage to store and retrieve data. I am able to store data without having to worry that a node failing might cause the loss of data.
  • Parallelizes the task with MapReduce and helps complete the task faster. The ease of use of MapReduce makes it possible to write code in a simple way to make it run on different slaves in the cluster.
  • With the massive user base, it is not hard to find documentation or help relating to any problem in the area. Therefore, I rarely had any instances where I had to look for a solution for a really long time.

Cons

  • Licensing is a bear.

  • The platform is still maturing and can be confusing to research and use. Basic tasks can still be manual and are not always user friendly.

I am no longer working for the company that was using Actuate but I believe they would continue to use it because the stitching costs would be to high. It would require a complete rewrite of the reports and the never version of Actuate (BIRT) even required an almost complete report rewrite

Hadoop is organization-independent and can be used for various purposes ranging from archiving to reporting and can make use of economic, commodity hardware. There is also a lot of saving in terms of licensing costs - since most of the Hadoop ecosystem is available as open-source and is free

I found it really useful during my academic projects. Data handling for large data sets was easy with Hadoop. It used to work really fast for bigger data sets. I found it reliable.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate was used by the indirect procurement team and the maintenance departments company wide across many facilities. Well over 100 concurrent users at anytime. Actuate was used across vast majority of locations with the ERP solution we had at the time.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has a HUGE number of features that can tie nicely into almost any ERP but it takes some time to learn and the development community was relatively small compared to the Crystal Reports alternative. Crystal was far easier to learn and had a massive support base. Probably because it is now owned by SAP.

Processing of big data has been the ultimate need for the me choosing Hadoop. Big data is massive and messy, and it’s coming at you uncontrolled. Data are gathered to be analyzed to discover patterns and correlations that could not be initially apparent, but might be useful in making business decisions in an organization. These data are often personal data, which are useful from a marketing viewpoint to understand the desires and demands of potential customers and in analyzing and predicting their buying tendencies.I think Hadoop processes it very efficiently

For my work, I was able to input data through Amazon Web Services' data storing service S3. I stored my input files in S3 and then accessed it in my application which then streamed data to Hadoop system. I think it was great integration considering the way data was streamed. I would recommend it to my colleagues

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • Fast ETL and realtime streaming data
  • Transformation and loading jobs are orchestrated using Oozie
