It depends on extensibility, set-up, access & style. Actuate performs fairly well, but has performance issues because it sits on top of eclipse, which sits on top of Java. Extensibility usually comes at that price. Set-up is fairly straightforward and it can be secured.

First of all I need to clarify that this is my first reporting tool so i do not have that much experience to compare. What i can think of is that Jaspersoft as I have worked with it is great for developing reports and dashboards which can be easily be embedded to any website or web app. There are various options for single-sign on processes and authentication. Also code customization is quite straightforward when you know what you are doing.

Pros

  • End user ability to customize Business Intelligence Reporting Tools (BIRT)
  • Actuate Support is usually prompt and helpful.
  • Ability to embed in other applications, has extendable code for authenticating/authorizing users.
Amy Broome profile photo
  • Support is excellent - very quick response time and good information.
  • Report server seems to run quickly and reliably without much attention.
  • Training material readily available.
  • Significant ability to customize the product

Cons

  • The debug tool that came with the Actuate 8 developer was poorly written in my opinion; compiling a report could be very difficult when a number of functions were being called.
  • There wasn't any reporting that could be run to download Actuate utilization statistics. Analytics had to be done by manually reviewing who had been running reports.
  • At times when the Actuate Server would become overloaded the only solution was to restart it. There wasn't a way to clear up the list of pending report requests.
Todd Bellamy profile photo
  • Excel defaults. When designing a report for PDF then exporting to Excel, Jaspersoft, in an effort to maintain pixel perfection, makes the excel version a bit unusable. It is possible to mitigate some of that with some intelligent directives but it would be easier if some things -- getting rid of extraneous rows and columns, for example, would behave a bit more intuitively without intervention.
  • More intuitive security on JasperServer. Much of the security features on Domains and Ad Hoc reporting require either direct manipulation of SQL, XML, or repository placement. I'd like to see some intuitive screens for setting up security in a more visual and intuitive manner.
  • More flexible security on JasperServer. I'd also like to see security down to the data source layer. Going through Domains is not always viable.
  • Better automatic validation up and down the Datasource to Domain to Ad Hoc chain when there is a change to a datasource or domain.

I am no longer working for the company that was using Actuate but I believe they would continue to use it because the stitching costs would be to high. It would require a complete rewrite of the reports and the never version of Actuate (BIRT) even required an almost complete report rewrite

We've converted our library of reports to use Jaspersoft. Our clients have had a taste of Jaspersoft and we've had very positive feedback from those interactions. Our internal employees have had great success using iReports and JasperStudio to create very robust reports that better show the data our clients expect to see. Overall, our experiences with Jaspersoft have been great and it's proven to be a very good decision for the direction of our business.

The end results are pretty good but the journey to get there is not very smooth and requires solid skills in many technical areas thereby making it ineffective for just plain business users. For them, just consumption is the only practical way to go.

We've never had an outage of the software itself. If it was unavailable, it was due to a network outage, not a problem with Jasper.

Never have we had a performance issue with it. The "slow" reports are due to the speed of the data being returned from the database, not Jasper.

I've had several issues using and implementing Jaspersoft over the last year. I've run into unique situations and strange bugs that seem to make no sense. Every time I've run into a brick wall on how to fix my issue, I've been able to create a support case with Jaspersoft and have a representative helping me within minutes. They've all been very knowledgeable about their product and every single issue I've had has been resolved. Granted, some of the issues took some creative solutions, but at the end of the day, I have a production environment that runs well and I know that if I run into any future issues, I'll have the assistance I need within minutes, not days.

Super easy to install and/or upgrade! For all the big name software out there that does some business critical things, Jasper is a pleasure to install and/or upgrade. The bundled installer is all ONE install (one shell script execution at least) that sets up everything. Vastly superior to most other software of this caliber.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate was used by the indirect procurement team and the maintenance departments company wide across many facilities. Well over 100 concurrent users at anytime. Actuate was used across vast majority of locations with the ERP solution we had at the time.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has a HUGE number of features that can tie nicely into almost any ERP but it takes some time to learn and the development community was relatively small compared to the Crystal Reports alternative. Crystal was far easier to learn and had a massive support base. Probably because it is now owned by SAP.

The breadth of features and functionality, Ease of access to a vast community of users for support. The key factor after comparing features and functionality was price. The Jaspersoft suite is hands down the best value bay a large margin..

Collaboration and Sharing

Having more that one developer working on Actuate reports became quite a problem because once a report was compiled it was published to the server. The published file then could not be decompiled and the design files had to be stored in a particular shared location on the server. Also, I experienced issues leaving code notes in the SQL statements of the reports when I tried to compile them

Data Integration

OpenText Analytics7.7
Based on 7 answers
This was a feature of Actuate I almost forgot. You could connect to number of different data sources across the organization from Oracle to MySQL and just about everything in between. Also if you have multiple environments of the same system (DEV,QA,PROD) you can change the connection string each time you compile the same report to promote changes. This was easier then changing the connections in alternative software like Crystal Reports

We've have a few hundred scheduled reports, and about 60-ish concurrent users. We've never had a performance issue with this software.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • When we demo our Jaspersoft environment to potential clients, their eyes light up and they sit up in their chairs a bit more. A lot of our meetings have ended with with the client very interested in our product due to Jaspersoft.
  • Our existing clients have been very satisfied with the adhoc features of Jaspersoft. We've been able to provide them better access to their data on their terms instead of ours. Of course this turns into a huge win for us.
  • We've always used SQL Server Reporting Services to deliver our reports to our clients. Converting to Jaspersoft has allowed us to generate the reporting layer that our clients demand. They no longer feel like they are settling for what we offer.
